  • No spend Challenge .... Interested?

I took a look at the list someone put up of the top threads for 2006 and came across the 'No spend challenge' thread

Another post got me thinking (thanks kris10leigh)...what if I voluntarily gave up spending for a week? Could I do it? What would be the ground rules (i.e. is gas allowed? For me it would need to be as DH needs to get to school and we fill up more than once per week). You would have to pay normally scheduled bills, like the

I read through it again and remember how fun and challenging it was. It made me remember how some of the challenges have actually assisted me changing the way I think and some of my spending habits.

Is anyone up for another 'no spend challenge'?

I would love to be able to do this! For some reason, I can never go more than a couple of days. Probably just need to keep practicing at it.....

No spending for a whole week? Nah, I don't think this can be done, especially if you have kids.

I've done this before out of necessity and not because I wanted to.

We are a family of four with two school aged kids. It's sometimes hard to not spend money as school expenses always seem to creep up. For instance, I need to buy the kids valentines. Not a huge expense, but an expense nevertheless.

I would like to try this but in all honesty I'm not sure how well I would do.

the challenges are all about getting creative, not necessarily doing without. for instance, could you and your kids make heart shaped sugar cookies and decorate them with icing so they looking like the candy hearts that say "be mine" "you're cute" etc? place 2 into sandwich baggies decorated with stickers and ribbons.

Actually, that is a very good suggestion, thank you.

DD (1st grade) would probably go for it but DS (5th grade) might not. I'll talk to them and see if they are interested.

I'd be interested in doing that but the surprise start is scary. I'd hate to have it be after it had been a couple weeks since I hit a grocery store!!

Would gladdly join, just not today...Sunday sure (medical issue today, need store, really need, not want)

as for kids, I have 3 and barring milk, I can and have easily gone a week..actually I only grocery shop once a week, so I practically do go a week every week...

As for valentines, homemade is way cooler IMO if he doesn't like brownies try cupcakes, muffins, whatever..though as a warning....red is hard to die. often comes out pink.

Maybe cherry flavored? or crasins in the mix? won't be red batter, but would be red in it....

What about a modified $20 bill challenge for those with kids? Take out one $20 bill and thats all you can spend. That should cover the essentials that pop up, but is small enough to make you second guess other non-essential purchases (which is what is at the heart of these challenges anyway).

I really like this idea. That way you can get that thing of eggs you dropped or the milk you ran out of. Or things that the schools ask for, etc. Actually, I saw that it said for people with kids. I need it also because I'm the one dropping the eggs or forgetting the milk!

Well the Valentines expense issue is solved... thanks tinapbeana and the others who commented.

Valentines this year will cost a total of................................................ .....................................

                              $2.64!!!

Boxed brownie mix was on sale for .88 so I bought 3. I have red plastic wrap (from C'mas goodies) and we will print off Happy Valentines Day labels to stick on the wrap.

So instead of spending ~$15, I spent just under $3.

                              Thanks!!!
