  • Writer Seeks Compulsive Shopper Stories

    Hi,
I'm a recovering compulsive shopper and author of a new nonfiction book on the subject. I am looking for overspenders willing to share their stories to help others. Also, there's so much great info here at this forum that I'm hoping to get some recovery stories, as well. I will assign each participant a pseudonym, so anyone willing to share will have their privacy protected.
There will be no payment for submissions; however, sharing your story can be cathartic, as well as helpful to other readers.
Please contact me here or by clicking the link to email me if interested.
    Best,
    hankus

I would have to talk to my wife and boy is that a can of worms to open!

      PricePlus,

I hope you will check with your wife about participating. Provided, of course, that she recognizes that she's a compulsive shopper! I was surprised by several members of my own family (with whom I've gone shopping) who clearly have no idea they've got a problem.

Hope to hear from you. Hang in there!

Hankus, that is interesting that you assumed it was PRICEPLUS's wife who had the shopping complusion rather than PRICEPLUS himself. (Though from my reading here for a while, I think you are correct.)

I would hope that people would share their stories here at savingadvice.com rather than relegate it to possible print publishing. A more immediatate catharsis and helpfullness can be had here than by giving it to Hankus, then waiting for it to possibly get published and possibly read. Plus one can get feed back here, while feedback from bookreaders is unlikely. This forum offers anonymity as well.

I have nothing against books, but I would like to uphold this forum. I beleive this forum has made huge differences for some of its active participants and silent readers.

          Joan,

Actually, I thought quite a bit about PricePlus's post...not sure either whether he or she was the shopper. But it did sound to me like his wife was the one with the shopping bags.

I understand your reservations about having writers solicit stories on the message board. However, I found the threads here to be very helpful to me personally, so I hoped that a few of these articulate posters might be willing to volunteer their stories to help or inspire others.

My book is in the proposal stage; however, I've got a stable of world-renowned psychologists and experts on board and am confident that this book, my fourth, is a go.

I will pull my post if you like (if I can figure out how). And please know that I did not intend to ruffle any feathers or exploit anyone for the sake of this project.

          Best,
          hankus

The board owner allows solicitaions like yours, so I don't think anyone will be pulling it. I just feel protective of this forum and want to see participation here, not pulled away elsewhere. Of course, some would probably enjoy participating both here and in your endeavor.

I've got my foot in both camps.

I've been active on this board for a while, and I write some of the content.

Recently I posted that I'd like to interview people who have been financially exploited by friends or family. The aim of the book is to show that these types of events are extremely common, and to help prevent people from making similar mistakes. Several agents are reviewing the proposal.

Thanks to the people who have already responded to me off-line. They are, of course, welcome to post about their experiences here if they choose.
