Thats crazy, last year my tax situation was exactly the same, but I did make 59k and the FED was 9000. I got back about $3,800 for the FED!!! (I got like 800 for the STATE)

If your fed tax last year was 9000 and you got back 3800, that means you withheld 12,800 last year. If you earn more now and you withhold less, your refund is going to shrink.

One other thing to check is the other adjustments on the 1040A. If you have interest on student loans and some other stuff your adjusted gross income might be lower than the quick calc I did for you. That would also increase your refund.

I really do advise downloading the 1040A form and instructions from the IRS sites. Just review the various things that might adjust your gross income - it might make it obvious that there's an adjustment that you are qualified for that's getting accidently left out of this year's calculation.

Also, maybe check last year's form to see if whoever did your taxes accidently claimed something that shouldn't have been claimed. Maybe it's not this year's calculation that's wrong - but last year's.

Has anyone used tax act. I've heard that they are cheaper than the other brands. Does anyone know anythiing about them or used them before? How happy have you been with them.

What I have done for the past few years (including this year) is to go through irs.gov and then "Free File". I used Turbo Tax's Freedom Plan. It was completely free. Of course, the original poster's income would disqualify him from the Free File (I think the highest income allowable is 50k.)

But for those of you who may be under the 50k mark, you may want to check it out.

I used Turbo tax for the first time this year!!!! It was fast, easy, very helpful, and I would DEFINATELY recommend it to anyone! I am also getting more money back this year than the years past and I paid only $39.95 to file my taxes. Last year H&R block charged me $355.00!!!!!!! I was really unsure at first, but it walks you right thru each step!! Couldn't be easier!
