    Re: Do you collect anything?

I have a stuffed penguin collection I started in 1990 that branched out into figurines, but not because I bought them. I went for the stuffed only, even if I do like the figurines. I haven't bought any myself in years and finally had to put a moratorium on them as gifts. I have a lapel pin collection I started when I was eleven in 1981. Every state I go to or significant place like Golden Gate Bridge or Grand Coulee Dam or Meteor Crater, I get a pin. I've got several from Disneyland as I get a new one each time I go. They are all pinned to a jean jacket I wore in high school. And I was getting them long before the Disney lapel pin craze started. And we collect Hallmark Puppy Love Christmas ornaments from 1990 when my husband and I first started dating. Come to think of it, he gave me my first penguin that year, too.

Used to collect cobalt glassware, but have spent the last two years deacquisitioning it in my junque' booth. Replaced it with ironstone and made a quick swoop of collecting all I need and have now stopped. The deal w/the cobalt was I did not stop and it became a deal that I had cobalt glass in every room of the house!! So, this time I'm FINISHED!! My family didn't get notice I guess because I got a whole set of china for Christmas and a platter, but really I'm FINISHED PEOPLE, I don't need any more.

          REALLY! I am.

          F.I.N.I.S.H.E.D.

Except for books and I've got to stop!! Really. ...and I have to start culling many MORE if I ever hope to downsize to a condo. That full size basement? It's the library and it's FULL of books!

Note to self - STAY OUT of the thriftstores and bookstores and garage sales!!

Collecting can become obsessive and one more thing to account for, dust, and lug around. I have a problem with collecting paper. I'm a paper junkie and have to be careful or it takes up too much space in my house. I collect recipes, lawn care articles, home decoration ideas, etc. It's hard to get rid of them.

                    Re: Do you collect anything?

I bet a lot of people have that experience Aurielle speaks of--people adding to their collection in ways not appreciated.
Once, I decided to start picking up little pieces of broken blue glass I might find on a sidewalk or where ever. Since blue glass is comparatively uncommon, finding broken bits of it was uncommon. My idea to do this first came to me when I lived in the ghetto and kept spotting bits of glass, smaller than my pinky fingernail, that must have been decades old. I had thought I might start collecting to make a mosaic.

Once I started collecting my little bits, washing them and dropping them into a clear jar on my kitchen window sill, well, somebody noticed and asked about it. Well to me, these broken bits were llike little gems from the earth. They just presented themselves and I liked them for the sparkly, little, inconsequential bits that they were and how, collectively, they made a lovely display in the sun.

But my friend decided to help me along in my collection. First he brought me an antique eyewash cup that he had broken on his bathroom floor. Okay, that was cool and I accepted it. But next thing I know he was cheerfully buying me blue glass bottles, vases, mugs, bottle stoppers, ashtrays, windchimes, inkwells, etc. Whatever blue glass the second hand stores offered, he would buy me. Then, _others_ began to think that I collected blue glass housewares and they began bringing me the same. Overkill! Ugh, please, overkill!

Once my friend moved, I gave away all that glass and have kept only the broken bits that I'd found on the roadside, gutter, railroad tracks, etc. Years later, it still all fits in the original jar. I just wanted a curious, pretty little something. I did not want to own the whole blue glass world!

The same thing happened once when I bought three little handmade brass birds. They were broken off Of a birdbath at a store and I offered the store a pittance for just the little birds. I would not have even liked the whole birdbath. Too frou-frou. Sure enough, a friend who saw them brought me a soapstone carved bird. I really did like it, too. But then the friend brought me several more bird figurines. I liked them all, but I do not want to own everything that catches my fancy! Thank goodness the imposed bird collection did not go beyond about eight.

I think I have also seen adult relatives (parents, even!) impose collections on children who really don't care much about the objects. I say, folks should collect what they themsleves would like to see a collection of rather than pretend that they are doing something really special by giving others all the elements of a collection.

I collect vintage clothing and shoes, also collect antique glass and various sets of dishes. I really need to pick my favorite things and sell or give away the others, it takes over my home!

My daughter really wanted to start a collection of something. When we took our first cruise in 2001, she started a key chain collection. Being a pretty well traveled child, she has amassed an impressive collection in 5 years. It's fun to look for interesting and unique keychains when we travel - not just generic ones that are just stamped with the name of the place. Most cost less than $5, which is perfect for a kid's budget (or an adult's).

                            * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
                            * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
                            * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

My co-workers often bring back key chains when then take vacations. A few of us got a pretty hefty collection hanging on our cubical wall!

I started a hummel collection about 30 years ago. Now I wish I could sell them. My husband has about 600 beer cans, all different, some are cone tops. I like to collect signed pictures too. To be trueful, if I could do it all over, I would not have collected anything. Now it is just a bunch of stuff to dust and to pack and move.
