  • Do you Notice Car Magnets?

Do business vehicle magnet signs get your attention? Pretty Cheap Jewelry is considering purchasing some. The goal: name recognition, with a tiny potential for someone actually googling 'pretty cheap jewelry' some day.

They are a little expensive, but might be effective advertising as the vehicle is on the freeway with thousands of other commuters.

Thanks for your thoughts and votes.

I notice them, but the only time I've followed up was when I noticed our neighbor's van had a magnet for his carpet cleaning service. I stopped by his house and talked to him, and have used him for cleaning our carpets ever since.

I'm not sure how they would work if people had to remember the web address until they got home and on their computer.

I noticed them and have followed up when I've seen a service I've been interested in (pet sitting, wheelchair ramps, etc.)

I honestly believe that the trouble is drivers can't afford to take their attention away just to read a sign. And jotting down a phone number? Forget it.

However, I don't think the concept is doomed yet. I think the ideal combination is a natural, intuitive logo that explains exactly what you do and to use a website instead. For example, if someone has a sign with a picture of a maid or something, then I'll know that they could be advertising a cleaning service.

From there, if I am interested, I can check out their website URL, which tends to be easier to remember (ie. www.cleaningmaid.com) rather than a phone #. An intuitive URL can also help me verify that I am indeed looking at a cleaning service.

They might work for advertising a service like scfr mentioned, but I don't think they'll create awareness for a product like jewelry that needs a visual to sell it. So I'd suggest you save your advertising dollars for something else with more impact!

I have bought vinyl letters and made my own signs much cheaper,
you see people with them on side windows all the time,

              I ordered mine from
              Letters unlimited inc.
they have a website do not know it but I have their #1800422 4231 (its on a little squeegee thing they give me to apply the letters)
they have vinyl graphics it is really professional looking when all is said and done and pretty cheap

When I was a Pampered Chef Consultant, having message magnets on your vehicle, or the company logo on your jacket when you fly on planes is considered business advertisement work so you could deduct taxes on your vehicle and plane tickets which can be good for your business finance in that aspect.

It’s a good idea not to put any logos or signs on windows for safety reasons. Most of the signs you can order mainly go on the side of the car door or on the back of a truck.

My husband has the magnets on each side of his van. I think they are good for business. No one ever takes him for the owner, cause he does all the grub work. So when they see his van there, they know he is the owner.

I didn't vote. Yes, I notice and read them, but I have never hired anyone or bought anything as a result of one. I read them just because they are there and it is something to look at, just like I look at billboards or read road signs or bumper stickers. So I can't say that they are an effective form of advertising as far as I'm concerned.

By the way, the link in your sig doesn't work.

Re: Do you Notice Car Magnets?

I read them when I am stopped at traffic, but not necessarily while I am driving. I would definitely call someone from a sign, if it was a service I legitimately needed.
After my car got a flat tire, I got two inquiries (one from a co-worker who helped me change my tire and the other from the mechanic) after they saw my real estate signs in my trunk. After that, I decided that people knowing you were in business was half the battle, so I decided to get a magnetic sign. It cost $20 from a small, local sign maker in my town. He warned me not to take it off too much (I did, because I didn't feel right having it on at my other job) and to wash the car well before I put it on (I didn't). Consequently, the sign fell off into the ditch. We found it, but it was too broken to use. I am thinking of getting a window cling instead, although the magnetic sign would have worked a lot better had I followed the directions (sheepish grin). I have the okay to display the sign on my car even while I am working my other job, so when I get a new sign, it will go on and not come off. Good luck! I think it's a relatively cheap source of name recognition.
