Normally I don't, but we have two people in my office with kids who have strep throat and one of the clerks was just diagnosed with it as well, so I'm sanitizing everything that's not moving and using the hand sanitizer as well.

If strep's not a bacteria, don't tell me, I need the peace of mind!

What all the other healthcare workers said. Take one Microbio class and you'll be using that papertowel on the bathroom door handle trick like your daughter and I do!

I am trying to ween my family off the AB soaps. They love the Bath and Body Works stuff and I think it is all AB formula for some unknown reason that is annoying to me. We have a ton of that stuff to use up before we start using the nice plain SOAP I have bought. (If you're looking for a great non-AB soap, I love the Softsoap Naturals Milk and Honey!)

You mean Streptococcus pneumoniae? They are often found as normal flora of healthy people.

I thought about it when I was using the door today but you know, I am probably the most healthy person around, my only problem is sinus issues. I have never had the flu, I used to get strep so much the doctors said I am a carrier, I think I got it cuz I have a drip in the back of my throat and it cause the infection which became strep, once I started on sinus pills it has gotten so much better, only 1 infection in 3 years. other than sinus's I don't get sick so back to the original thought, I am not going to panic too much I think that people tend to overprotect themselves so much that they can't fight anything. The other day one of my step kids had a minor tummy ache. The first thing their mom does is reach for a bottle of stuff. PULEASE!!! Lets first find out what the problem is. Did he eat to much?, Did he drink to much? She does this on everything, sniffles, cough, anything. I am more inclined to wait at least an hour on tummy aches unless they are severe and 24 hours on general "I don't feel good" before I medicate too much. If there is a fever I give them motrin. I feel this is why my daughter is rarely ill even at 21 and hers get sick all the time and I mean ALL the time.

Re: Does anyone use Antibacterial stuff?

As my good friend Ben once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I am also incredibly healthy, but I am not going to touch that public restroom handle with my bare hand if I don't have to.

Taking meds is another story altogether. I almost never take meds. I always look for the underlying problem first and try to rid myself of that before I even think of taking meds.

Great example. I was being sexually harassed in a job I had years ago. My physical response to the stress decided to lodge in my gut - horrible stomach pain, the works, pretty much every single night. I went to the doctor who gave me a script for antidepressants and acid blockers. Never took even one of the antidepressants. I didn't need them. Sure I had issues, but I knew exactly what the cause was, so I stayed in the job as long as I could and then I quit before it killed me. I did, however, end up taking the stomach meds just to get myself through until I could change jobs. You've gotta cure the source of the problem, not just treat the symptoms. I only wish more people understood that concept - but the big drug companies would go bankrupt! *LOL*

hehehhee! as my father says "There's no profit in a cure!"

personally i just think there's too heavy a use of antibiotics and antimicrobials in general. they're seen as a cure-all when of course they're not.

as for the public toilets: i tend to flush with my foot and open the door with my elbow if possible. it's not the germs that gross me out, it's the stuff i might actually be able to see. blech!!!
