It is a long process, as soon as you learn how to get a system going the better it is. It also helps to be a numbers person, seeing balances going down is nice. Just think of where you want to be in a few years, and look around at people that are that age and in serious financial trouble.

      What keeps you motivated ?
      My ex.

I think it's also important to celebrate every little step that we take, no matter how small. I pat myself on the back everytime I pay down my student loans, especially when I pay extra. When you think about it, it's so easy to slide into debt, but climbing out is hard. Sometimes, it's important not to look too far out and get discouraged about how much further you have to go.

I like tracking the changes in accounts. I like recording the balance of debt going down and the savings going up!! I have a spreadsheet to keep track. For me that seems to be motivation enough.

I think it also helps to think what you are gaining from paying down debt...paying less interest and getting rid of a debt obligation.

Watching the balances go down (or up, as appropriate!) helps me stay on the straight & narrow, for the most part.

Also, building in treats and luxuries helps it not be a grind.

Mostly, though, it's the idea of financial security. The idea of being safe and protected and having choices that keeps me working toward my goals.

Watching the difference in money going out and savings building up was what helped me on the getting CC debt free. I don't like debt period - it just makes me madder than a wet hen to have debt piling up...so it became a ME vs. IT battle wherein I knew I wasn't going to be the loser.

One thing that woke me up to saving more was seeing just how much we were paying out to health insurance each month and yet we weren't even saving that much for our own future. Hummmppphhhhhhhh! That's no good. So, I upped the payback schedule and increased the automatic savings. Now we are in a much better place!

Also a geekette here who likes to see my figures balance out all nice and pretty! Plus we do have that retirement thing looming in the near future. All of these were pretty good motivators for us.

My motivation comes from wanting a sense of peace and security. I want to know that I have extra each month and that not every penny is going toward a bill that has to be paid. After years and years of scrimping to pay the bills and worrying about where the money is coming from, I just want some peace of mind. Helps keep the blood pressure down.

Hard to say. Maybe it was my upbringing. The thought of being penniless or dependent on others is anathema to me!

Re: What keeps you motivated ?

I have only been doing this for 2 months now - so I also hope I stay motivated. Right now, my biggest motivation is the thought that we will never get ahead if we stay where we are. Right now we can't afford vacations (except a weekend at a resort - off season). If something happens to a major appliance we will not be able to replace it without more debt.

My motivation is to gain peace. That, and I love to watch the numbers go up on my savings and go down on my debts. If one doesn't go well that month, hopefully the other will make me smile!

The above responses are exactly what motivates me. Peace, stability, and comfort. Having been through a financial mess, I now know what it's like to feel financially helpless. I don't ever want to go through that again.

Perhaps I'm being brash for saying this, but I don't think I'll run out of being motivated. I think it will take me a lifetime to achieve the level of stability and comfort in life that I desire.

Well, I have been motivated for over 40 years. I am like most of you. I keep track of the debt and I keep track of the savings. I like seeing one go down and the other go up. I enjoy seeing how much interest I earn on my money market every day.

my daughter's well being keeps me motivated...while she's not getting as much "stuff" as her peers right now, she still has all her needs taken care of, and some treats from time to time, too!...but, I couldn't go to university to become a "real" translator because of money problems at home (no, student loans were not available in my country then....nor was the career, either...I would have had to go abroad...definetely NOT an option!)...I really wouldn't want her to have to go through that!...I also wouldn't want her to put herself in a difficult position, financially, to support me when I'm old...that means I need enough money to at least help her with her studies in 14 years AND enough money to support myself in 30 years!....time slips by so fast...I know it sounds like 14 years is a long way off, but, considering my current financial situation, believe me, it's nothing!

I couldn't of said it better!

Though keeping a roof over my head, food to eat, ect on the basics is my motivation espcially on a single income.
