Re: How many people shop at Wal-Mart?

I shop at Walmart. Shopping there, combined with price matching and coupons can really help stretch a grocery budget. Now that you'll shop there...do something with that money you are now saving on groceries...credit card debt, retirement savings, emergency fund.

I try to avoid it as much as possible. Around here the prices aren't usually any better (or if they are, it's by a penny or two, not worth the trouble). DH likes it though so I sometimes get draged along when he wants to go.

I do hate to admit it, but the christmas lights we got there were actually quite nice. I want to go back and get a few mores sets.

Shop there once a week, they have some staple groceries at our local one but it is not a super center, used to live near a super center and loved it!

It offends my sense of entrepreneurialship, being a small business owner. (How's that for spelling without computer help?!)

But my husband is a ruthless cost comparer and goes there on the way in to work before 7am.

It is dirty, impersonal. The parking lots are filthy and all the surface drainage hugely pollutes the streams and oceans adjacent.

Please BTW point me to a key of these abbreviations, ie DH, DD, etc. MIL=Mother in Law

Don't forget to place your guess in the trivia question in my blog. GOOD LUCK

Just wanted to say that none of this is true at any of the 3 Wal-Marts in my immediate area.

I can honestly say I've never been in a Wal-Mart. No, it's not an elitist attitude; there are none located anywhere near me. They almost built one, but the NIMBYs ("not in my backyard") objected. I'd love to see what all the fuss is about. Although I'm sure I'd spend more than I intended to.

The Wal-marts near me are filthy, unorganized and too busy on the eyes. It’s also over crowded. I try shopping there a few times because some things were advertised for much cheaper. Each time I went, I ended up walking out with nothing. I could not handle it in there without getting sick to my stomach.

I live in the Bay Area where big cities are pretty congested.

However, the super Wal-Mart in Montana were very nice and just as clean as the Target store. On the ironic side, Target in Montana were not so nice.

I only go a few times a year. Ths closest one is 25 miles away. They are talking about building one here, but I hope they don't. I am afraid I will spend too much money if there is a store close to me.

We go weekly if not more often, just to a regular one. The closest super ctr is like 45 min away.

I try to just go there with a list, no diff than grocery shopping & try not to buy anything extra... & I do mean try!

Re: How many people shop at Wal-Mart?

I used to live in a small town north of where I live now. When Wal-Mart moved in, they cut the prices and all the locally owned shops and stores went out of business. The downtown is dead.

Last week PBS showed a Frontline program on "Is Wal-Mart Good for America?" Although it was from 2004, they updated it to 2006. It said that Wal-Mart basically tells it's vendors what it will pay, but because it's such a large company, they can make or break a company. According to the report, Rubbermaid had big problems in the '90s because Wal-Mart didn't like their raising their prices because resin went up and it hurt Rubbermaid bit time. Seems a t.v. manufacturer went out of business in another town because Wal-mart wanted stuff from China. One sock company said to keep Wal-Mart's business, one has to have a factory in China.

I try not to shop Wal-mart because oftentimes they are not the cheapest and I want to keep local merchants around.

I shop at Walmart! Only b/c they are open 24/7 and they do have some good prices! I just hate the way they treat there employees.

The local Wal-Mart is not a pleasant place to shop. The store is difficult to navigate, badly arranged, and confusing. I go out of my way to avoid the place.

I too try to avoid Walmart. I find the locations around me are dirty as well, especially the parking lots. The location in Plano, TX will let their grocery carts litter the parking lot until they run out in the store. Very unsightly. I prefer Target. They keep their stores cleaner and while it may be a few cents more expensive, the Kraft spirals mac 'n cheese is a good 20 cents cheaper at Target.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think DH=Dear Husband. Besides just searching the net for bulletin board shorthand/abbreviations, I don't know of any key for this stuff either.

Jeffrey posted a list of these, and the thread is to be found here. You can also use search and look for "Abbreviations."
