  • How Good Are Your Employer's Benefits?

    Another post got me thinking about this; some companies get a little creative with benefits, perhaps to make up for bigger ones they can't afford. I thought it would be interesting to list all the benefits you receive from your employer, in addition to your salary.

    Mine:
    * Health insurance (but poor vision and no dental)
    * 3 weeks vacation
    * 4 personal days
    * 1 or 2 summer Fridays
    * about 10 paid holidays
    * company-matched 401(k)
    * health savings account

    i'm pretty happy with the amount of time i get off, about 4 weeks a year, but wish i had that dental insurance and better vision.

    Health insurance, vision discount, no dental
    14 vacation days
    12 sick days
    2 personal days
    about 10 paid holidays
    company matched retirement fund up to $1500
    very flexible work time

      Re: How Good Are Your Employer's Benefits?

      7 pd holidays
      1 floating holiday
      10 vacation days (tenure thing, just started here in august)
      no sick day policy other than "out 5 days in a row gets you qualified to apply for short term disability"
      medical/vision/dental are all OK
      no 401k

      that's the bad (or rather, the 'not good')

      the good/great: i'm paid about 40% more than the job i was laid of from in june, i have the flexibility to work in the office or out of the office as needs dictate, and even after been here just a short time i have the ability to make a significant difference.

        fair- to- middling health ins and dental, poor vision (only pays $40 tops)
        3 weeks vacation, goes up to 4 weeks in 2 1/2 years
        3 personal days
        12 sick days
        about 10 paid holidays
        (unofficial) go home 1 to 1 1/2 hours early on Fri before a Mon holiday
        pension (gov't job)
        free $20,000 life insurance policy
        lower rates on AFLAC

        These are the bennies that are also available but I don't use:
        HSA
        457 plan
        There's a couple others but I can't think of them right now

          nearly nonexistent (through employer)
          3 paid sick days
          court holidays (unpaid)
          free postage
          somewhat flexible about doctors appts, etc..
          leave early with pay about 4 times a year (when managing partner is happy!)
          1 paid MCLE class of not more than 2 credits (I pay for the other 23 credits)

          through bar association:
          50 K life insurance policy and discount on malpractice ins.

            Re: How Good Are Your Employer's Benefits?

            * Health insurance/Dental insurance
            * 22 Days vacation
            * 15 Sick Days (Can carryover forever)
            * 13 paid holidays
            * Matches 8% when I give 5% towards retirement
            * 35 Hour work week
            * Life Insurance: 3.5 times salary

            Great benefits but the pay is about 25% less then if I worked someplace else. I also have to pay 1% to a union (not optional).

              Re: How Good Are Your Employer's Benefits?

              No vacation, no sick time, no paid time off period.....health benifits cost a third of his salary.

              No 401K match, (thoughthere is a autowithdrawal service if you want)

              On the upside is a relativly flexable schedule...sortof...not that he is home right now when we need it....

              err....it sucks? but pays better than last check signer (same job, new company)

                Health insurance is pretty awesome. Other than that, nothing.

                  Re: How Good Are Your Employer's Benefits?

                  We use the wife's benefit package and dropped mine. The insurance I had would not add any value and it was pretty pricey.

                    * Vision Inurance
                    * 3 weeks vacation (now that I hit 5 years - was 2 weeks before)
                    * Unlimited sick pay (I swear I took 30+ days sick, easy, one year when I was pregnant and very ill).
                    * 8 paid holidays (none during tax season)
                    * Profit Sharing (Employer contirbutes 10% of my pay to retirement evey year).
                    *Flex time, low hours most of the year
                    *Professional Dues/Licenses paid for (Around $500/year)
                    *Required Continuing Education paid for (Around $1500 per year)
                    *Paid overtime "bonuses" though I am salaried.
                    *I could switch to part-time if I wanted, and I did for a short period when my second son was born. But to do so I would lose holidays, vacation, professional dues, continuing education, & probably vision. For now I can't swing all that on one income - I wish. But it is nice I have PT options down the road.

                    No health insurance or dental, but the profit sharing pretty much makes it a wash - he contributes about what I pay for health and dental.

                    Stingy benefits and LOTS of hours are regular for my industry. The fact that I only have to work 50 hours during tax season and 40 hours the rest of the year is pretty unheard of. I'll take it. At face value everyone always thinks it is horrible I don't have employer-provided health insurance for my family, but the flexibility with my job, good hours, and the profit sharing & overtime blow my other options out of the water.

                    Reading the other posts I don't feel so screwed as usual. I guess I have it good.

                      12 holidays
                      4 weeks annual leave
                      2.6 weeks sick leave
                      health, vision & dental
                      401k 3 % match, puts in first 4 %
                      double salary life insurance
                      Longevity pay

                      Pretty good I think....

                          I'm lucky and I know it.

                          * Health insurance (pretty decent, my premium $44/mo, $500 deductible)
                          * 12 sick days a year, accruing, no pay out if not used
                          * 15 day vacation (I'll get 20 in 3 more years)
                          * 2 personal days
                          * about 12 paid holidays
                          * Death leave 5 days an instance
                          * paid jury duty
                          * family sick leave 5 days a year, doesn't accrue (I never use)
                          * CALpers pension (my mandatory contribution is almost $300 month, but it's a solid pension-even Sweeps agrees!)
                          * Deferred comp 457 plan offered
                          * term life insurance $5000
                          * health savings account, dependent care, etc. offered, not taken
