  • International Buy Nothing Day

I don't recall seeing any discussion about this annual exercise, so I may as well ask.

Is anyone planning to participate in the International Buy Nothing Day?

I think the university crowd supports this locally. Last year there were people distributing leaflets locally at the big mall. They made the news, which was good. "The only bad publicity is no publicity."

Of course, posting something like this on a board dedicated to frugal living is preaching to the choir.

He produced the ad that the networks wouldn't run. He tried to buy air time for it over and over, but was turned down, with remarks to the effect that "there's no law that we have to" and "it's in opposition to the current economic policy of the United States."

now that's just downright creepy. WHAT THE FOO?!?!??? tv stations wouldn't take the man's money for the ad? they're not being consumers in order to prevent an anti-consumer message from getting out, thereby supporting the very movement they're trying to defeat?

makes my head hurt. BUY NOTHING!

TV stations make their money selling ads that get us to buy yhings. They are not going to sponsor anything that may harm revenues! I am in on the buy nothing day! Anyone else?

i understand that, price, but the irony of them refusing to buy something that could hurt them in the end (i.e. that encourages others to refuse to buy), thereby practising exactly what they're trying to NOT preach (i.e. don't buy something just because it's there to be bought, think about the consequences), is just too funny to me!

I'm trying to do the same. However, I'll be more than happy to play along. Especially on Black Friday. I plan on staying home all day on that day!

I hate going to shopping malls on any day, so I'll be more than happy to stay home (and even stay away from Ebay, Amazon, etc.) on Black Friday.

That article made me think, "Hmmm, I don't have a thermos in which to carry my own coffee or tea as recommneded. I'd like to have one. Wonder how much they cost?"

I don't go shopping much, and I do make it a point to especially not shop on Black Friday.

haaaaaaaaaahahahahha!!! ever think about how the borg are like space vampires? and vulcans like elves? ok, sorry, inner geek clawing its way to the surface!

regarding the thermoses: go to the camping section of walmart/kmart, or the housewares section of target. depending on what size and quality you want, you can get one for $10-$30 dollars. BTW the $30 kind are gigando and hold about 2/3 a pot of coffee, my parents have had one for 20 years or so. the stanley brand or actual thermos brand are the ones i've seen hold up the best.
