  • Asking for money for Christmas

I have really enjoyed this site and it has helped me quite a bit in saving money for a down payment on the house I hope to buy next year. I was wondering if it is appropriate to ask people to give me cash instead of gifts this Christmas to go toward the down payment, or is that tacky?

Really it depends on how you do it. Let people know that you are saving for a downpayments and that you are trying use every penny towards that. Maybe they will get the hint. Maybe not

I don't think it's a problem for those you feel comfortable asking and those that ask yuo if there is anything in particular you want for X-mas. For the others, Theresa's idea sounds like a good idea. Give them the hint, but let them make the final decision.

If you can comfortably ask for money, great!

If not... the next best thing for me would be asking for gift cards at Lowe's and Home Depot. There are many things needed after the move is complete, and you can get off on the right foot without having to put more out. Also, gift cards for Wal-mart or something. You can use those instead of cash (even now) for your groceries or household needs, and use the cash saved for the down payment.

Good luck! I just bought a home in Sept, and I can completely relate!
