Saving receipts and price book

I started making a price book a few weeks ago from the article on this site. Although the one here is focused on groceries, I decided to keep track of my other purchases as well. I had purchased a cooler a few weeks ago and had written the price down. I was in the same store the other day and noticed that the cooler was selling for $5 less than what I had paid for it. I made an off hand remark to one of the sales clerks that I had bought it too soon and she said "Just bring in the receipt and we will refund the money."

I brought in the receipt yesterday and had no problem getting the $5 refunded. I don't know if all stores do this, but it does pay to save the receipts and the price book is a great way to keep track of all your purchases.

I don't know what the laws are in the U.S. (I'm in Canada), but here there is a law that states that customers have 30 days from the date of purchase for price protection. Stores must refund the difference within 30 days.
Good for you for being aware of the price drop and acting on it! It's a good reason to keep track of receipts- something I could be better at.

I don't know if it is a law either but most stores have that policy as well.

I save ALL my receipts. This way if it goes on sale in the next couple weeks I get get money back. Plus if you forget your coupons, you will get that money back too

I also save ALL my reciepts.... problem I have, is what to do with all those reciepts?

how do you all organize those receipts? I litterally have receipts comming out of my ears!!

I save them in a big pencil case and go through them every few months. I throw out the old ones that I know I will never need.

ckhang - you have to PAY for that site? No thanks. Plus, too many receipts have enough cc information to need to worry about identity theft.

thats why you should scratch off any information like your CC# for example...besides, your reciepts arent going to show your whole cc#, only the last 4 digits!

well, if you dont mind, can everyone scan all their receipts and send it to me? i dont care about your cc#'s...only your receipts...

I toss out all my reciepts for things that can't be returned, like groceries... after looking over them of course for any overcharges. Since shopping with 2 lil ones who can't keep their mit's off the candy rack while you are trying to pay one can get distracted over what they are into rather than what an item rang up for.

Typically I keep most store reciepts til they "expire" & items can no longer be returned just in case.

How to keep your receipts

Keep all your shopping dockets and receipts for reference and refunds. Bundle them up in monthly lots then into six monthly in ziploc bags. I keep them for two years in a shoebox. Filing your bill receipts into a folder for future reference by kind but for now just keep them! (see below.) I do take out any bundle that is more than 2 years old. Use your spending notebook to find the date of item if you need to make a refund if it didn’t have a warranty with it, which should be on file with your warranty.

What to do with your receipts?

You may need these at anytime to answer any question that you can think of. Like the finding ways, to find another area that you may save money. e.g. Price book, proof of purchase, finding info to make a pet budget etc.
I do make many a charts to track my utilities like kWh and water KL part of my bills. The number of phone calls to check if I am getting the best deal at the time. Tracking amounts on Banking statements for interests, ATM, or extra bank charges that I stop or charge my habits to save money. All these little things do save money if you keep your I eye on them! All this should be reviewed every six months or yearly.

Notes: Spending notebook is my daily spending tracker for my monthly budget checking.

Pet budget - yes, my cats do have they own budget amount with the goal of spend under that amount each month.

I save every receipt I get. I have a plastic file crate, and I have files labeled for monthly expenses, and bills etc. At the end of the year I place all of the receipts for a particular category in a labeled envelope and place those envelopes in a big envelope that I label and seal for the year. I started this in 2003, so I have three sealed big envelopes that I keep.

I also record all of my expendituresi n a spreadsheet, different tabs for the year so I have a record electronically as well.

I did have to go back in the year envelope a few days ago, when something appeared on my credit report that should not be there, so I'm glad I kept my receipts, but I keep them very neat and organized so nobody can accuse me of being packratish.
