  • Ethical question

My hubby told me that it is somewhat unethical and manipulative for me to always kiss butt when I shop at more expensive places in the hopes of coming home with bags of samples.

Do you think it is unethical and manipulative? Or do you think that kissing butt is the normal state of affairs that humanity engages in to get what one wants?

No, I don't think it's unethical. People act and behave in certain ways all the time to get what they want, and as mary poppins said, 'a spoonful of medicine makes the medicine go down...in the most delightful way..."

In the opposite vein, "A squeaky wheel gets the grease," meaning, you sometimes have to make a stink and a pest of yourself to get a complaint heard. So if he doesn't think that is unethical, being unpleasant to get your needs met, then he shouldn't feel that being extra nice to someone to get what you want is, either.

Depending on how far you take it (clevage flashing, endless simpering, etc) it could be kind of pathetic, but I still wouldn't call it unethical.

I suppose it would be unethical if you were leading someone to believe that you wanted to be friends (or more) with them when really all you're interested in free samples.

But if you're just being especially polite and friendly, I don't really see a problem with it.

Um, they are free samples...they were designed to be given away. So as long as you aren't stealing them, I don't see anything wrong with being nice to get a few. You could take it to far, but....well I'm sure you wouldn't be the first, nor the last.
