    Re: Phones....

Well don't keep it *just* for your DSL Ima - there are a lot of options out there. Cable is pretty good/better (Depending who you ask) and cost is comparable. We've had both. Only downside I see is cable goes out more than DSL... I assume you can get cable internet connection without having to get a cable tv package of course.

Actually, I Think I got that wrong - not T-1. there is there some new fiber-optic technology. Fancy but pricey.

This may not actually be the case in some areas. Many phone companies have "naked dsl" where you dont need phone service, (just the physical wires). I pay 19.99 for this. Regular Dsl (with phone service) would run me about $17 a month, but with the phone service costing 50 amonth it saves me a bundle. Not all areas have this, and it isnt extensively advertised but it does exist.

I wondered about that - with DSL. Interesting.

            Re: Phones....

I've have used ONLY my cell since September of 2004.
I was a Sr in college, and moved out of the dorm into an apartment. Didn't bother getting a landline.

Then I moved to NJ in summer of 2005, and just kept my cell phone. Didn't bother getting landline since fiance and I are paying $70/mo total for 2 cells -- for the purpose of "free" long distance calling to our parents and many friends, and we didn't have to tell all our friends a new phone number. Together we have 500 peak minutes to use to non-Verizon phones before 9pm, and It hasn't been a problem since we started last July.

If we got a land line, we would want pay-as-you go cell phones anyway to have in the car in the event of a break down/emergency, and it would cost more to have pay-as-you-go cells and a landline, than it would be to have our 2 cells.

                Re: Phones....

                I've been cell-only since... spring 2005.

It works for me. I get "free" long-distance to parents, SO, friends, and colleagues, who happened to be scattered all over the northeast.

I've also been constantly on the move. In college, I had a new dorm room every year. Out of college, I subletted for a summer, I'm currently leasing for a year, and I'm occasionally out of town for weekends. I might move again next year, and again the year after that, and again, two years after that.

In the end, I'd rather be attached to "people" than "places".

Plus, I'm almost never home, anyway. I keep my cell well-charged, I generally have my charger with me on-the-go, and if I'm in the type of emergency where I can't find a power outlet, I doubt I'd have much luck with landlines, anyway (since they require power, too).

The only possible downfall is if I lose or break my phone. But my phone is still fine after 1-1/2 years, despite being dropped multiple times. And there is a landline in the office.

Overall, I don't think I'd mind if I never got a landline ever again.

                  Re: Phones....

Using a cell phone is not an option for me. I can't get reception where I live. I also looked into getting verizon's new wireless network internet and can't get that either. Also because the telephone company knows that you have no options land line service with local calling only and no frills. (no caller id or call waiting etc) is $40/month. I have been annoyed by this for a long time.

Another annoying feature is that I can't get vonage or other internet calling. I used Smart Communications for long distance and pay 25 a month for 1200 minutes of long distance per month. This is the cheapest I have been able to find. Annoyihg,

My DH & my DS both have cells but we like to keep the landline for emergencies. I don't 'd know if other areas work but cells, portables, and internet access does not work when the power is down , but the regular phone service will work. During hurricanes when power goes down, I can still make a call. Of course I need to have a flash light to get around!!! LOL!

in California you do not need to have phone service in your home to call 911. just plug any phone into any socket and you can reach 911 and the operator.

I need to have internet set in my cell phone so I can use the Relay service for the deaf to type out their phone calls. This feature on a cell phone is expensive enough for me that I do not want to pay for a landline as well. Any Relay calls will NOT accept 911 calls anyways but they do however accept calls to the local police. The trick is to have the police number on hand. In the meantime, there are tons of petitions, arguments filled and so on within the deaf community to attempt to change they system that would improve the calls for the deaf to use 911.

                            Re: Phones....

I gave up my landline in 2002, and I never looked back. I was using the phones at work today, and it felt so wierd to use a phone that actually plugged into the walls. I see a landline as an expense for something that I would never use, so I never bothered.

I want one phone where I can be reached at 24/7, and my cellphone provides me with it. My plan's perfect for me, and I never have to worry about things like long distance, etc. I also live in the northeast, so I get pretty good coverage (cingular).... I never had a signal problem.

FWIW I am also single and childless.

                              Re: Phones....

We don't have cell phones out here, just a land line with the bare minimum on it. It gets pretty regular use and I have DSL. The way I see it is if I'm already on the phone and someone needs to get ahold of me they will call me back. Even a basic cell package will cost you more than a land line around these parts. I used to have only a cell phone, before I was married. I got so old after awhile when people would call and ask me why I didn't pick up before. Hummm.....maybe because I was doing something, maybe I just didn't feel like talking at that moment.... they would take it personal. I hated being able to always be reached like that.

I will always have a land line. I want to be able to pick up a phone and dial 911 without having to wonder if the phone is charged up, or being able to find the stupid thing. The last thing I want is to have to hunt down the phone during an emergency! My land line costs $35 a month (I pay for an unpublished number and caller id, my only add-ons) and my pre-paid cell averages about $5 a month, so it's not like it's a huge extra expense!
