What does DH stand for?

Sorry for the silly question but I really need to know. The only DH I know is the designated hitter in baseball.

Stands for dear husband. DD=dear daughter DS=dear son DW=dear wife, etc. I have no idea how this got started.

Strange. I thought it was "Darling Husband".

I hope no one gets offended with me saying this, but I kind of wish people wouldn't use that. It's kind of confusing, especially with DS, which I've also seen it to stand for "Darling Sister"... or is that "Dear Sister".

I don't know what the answer is. Perhaps the best thing to do is for the moderators/admins to create a sticky thread that explains all the common acronyms on this board? Doing so will also provide the added benefit of "standardizing" its usage.

Of course, if people keep using, it wouldn't bother me either. Of all the things that can get my knickers in a bunch, this is probably at the bottom of the list.

I think the first D in any of those is "flexible" to what ever word you mean in all positive, neutral and negative sense in what ever statement you are putting the abbreviation in. As long as everyone got the clear picture of whom you are talking about then the exact wording of the first letter does not matter much.

Oh good, so I can interpret it to mean "darned husband" etc.

I don't mind these abbreviations when other people use them, but when I am about to use them myself I always catch myself wanting to call my spouse DS for Darling Spouse (or Darned Spouse, depending on my mood). I do not have a husband. People use SO for Significant Other. I guess I should use that too but I alwasy forget and end up just typing "my spouse".

But it's still not as confusing as the Ss as in SIL and SS - sister in law? Son in law? Stepsister? Stepson? Sometimes you just have to read for context.

Don't worry Chubrock, those took me a while to figure out too! Here's a few other basics ones. I still confused at not so common ones.

LOL - Laugh out loud
BTW - By the way
IMO - In my opinion
IMHO - In my humble opinion
MIL - Mother in Law
FIL - Father in law
SIL - Sister in law
BIL - brother in law
SS- Step son
SD - Step daughter

Those are all the basic ones. I know I run across lot's that I have to try and figure out. So let's list any here that you've seen used so we can all make sure we are saying the same thing.

Broken Arrow, you will find these same acronyms on all other message boards. They've become rather universally used, not just here. For a long time I refused to use "DH" and just typed out "my husband". I've come around.

I have only seen a lot of these acros here, and Ive been chatting through computers since 8 lines of text filled up a page.

I dont know why people find this need to be lazy and confuse people

I actually thought DH was Dead Husband in some of the posts, the whole IL conflict with other acros, such as MIL, being a man in love, and dont get me started on that SS post again LOL. That was a terrible one. Acros need to be commonly used phrases, or profesional titles, not laziness. Imagine if people used whatever abriviations for states when mailing letters that they felt were correct.

And Ive also had many people who sell stocks call a DH a drop half.
Doctor of Humanities, Dental Hygienist are ones I hear occasionally.
DH (Dirham) is also a type of currency.

I dont think Husbands should be attached to such an acro anymore. Heck, do people mean dear husband, dumb husband, deployed husband, drunk husband?

I dunno. I've been around forums since back in the BBS days. I was even a Sysop at one time.

However, this the first board I've encountered that uses the DH/DS/DIL abbreviations .

The rest that has been cited are fairly universal, however. In that, I mean, IMO, IMHO, BRB, LOL, ROFL, BTW, IRL, IIRC, OTOH, YMMV, and so forth.

Oh well, WFYB (Whatever Floats Your Boat).
