A Nation In Mourning

By now most if not all of you would know that The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was killed on Monday 4th September. Australia as a nation is in shock and dismay. Condolence sites have crashed due to the 100,000s of people trying to pay their respects to his family.
So what has this tragedy got to do with saving money? Sometimes we get carried away with saving 10c here $5 there we tend to forget about the more important aspects of life. Family and friends. Having stacks and stacks of cash isn't going to be of any use if you don't have anyone to share it with.

News sources reported that Steve placed all his money from movies and television into Australia Zoo and worldwide wildlife conservation efforts. He did not keep great amounts of wealth for himself. Steve's life demonstrated this concept of sharing with others...and in his case, it was wildlife.

I was so saddened to hear of this. We used to love watching the Crocodile Hunter when we were in college.
He will be sadly missed by many. My condolences to his family and country.

I was saddened to hear this tragic loss. His wife is from Oregon (which is where I live).

You raise a good point and one Ive pondered....

My frugality comes from leaving a good paying job to spend more time with family...not because we are trying to accumulate wealth....but I know there are lots of reasons for folks being frugal.

My prayers are with his family, and Austrailia. You lost a good one!

I too was so sad to here of this! The world has lost a great fighter for animals of all kinds. It will never quite be the same to watch animal planet.

My prayers go to his wife, children, family, friends, co-workers, and his nation.

That there aren't more like him, makes us feel the loss even more.

I agree with the sentiment, but I am surprised by the Australian reaction. I lived in Sydney for years and there was a lot of antipathy (perhaps due to the "tall poppy syndrome") towards him for perpetuating the Crocodile Dundee stereotype of Australians.

Yes, this was a tragedy! He was well known and liked throughout the world.

I hope to always keep my priorities straight and not get tied up in the fincancial aspect of life. In fact, I think I'll take my daughter to the park!

He may have been a little over the top for me, but his show did something much more.... introduced children to the importance of the conservation of wildlife.

He will surely be missed. My heart goes out to his wife and kids. Especially his daughter (his son's not old enough to remember but she is)

Yes I have to agree to a certain extent. Australians aren't gung ho over celebraties, sports heros etc. And for a lot of people that visit here that is what they like about the place. It is so laid back and relaxed.
Steve Irwin was kinda like the weird uncle at parties that would tell jokes and everyone would roll their eyes. Then you go to a party and he's not there and everyone's miserable.
