Hello all:
I am new here. I am a self-employed medical transcriptionist/SAHM. I have always "dabbled" in the art of frugality but have not made much headway. So I thought I would become more active in a frugal website to see ways to save money. I am happy to be part of this group and would appreciate any advice on how to save on the electric bill. We live in an older home which unfortunately is not well insulated (although not an option to upgrade on that with finances at this time). It has been a pretty hot summer here and we cool our home by window units. We have a window unit in the lower level of the home which does not have a "power saver" on it unfortunately. During the day, I try to use this air conditioner as little as possible but with the extreme heat, have no choice but to use it at times. I usually put it on low whenever I turn it on, however, like I stated, there is no power saver option. My hubby on the other hand who works outside all day, insists on turning it on high when he gets home and believes it is the best method to go ahead and cool down the house. Any suggestions here as to the best money saving method if we must use it? Low vs high or should I cut the thermostat back as much as possible and keep it on low during the hotest part of the day?
Thanks so much for any advice!
