    Re: Clothing Costs

I do thrift/vintage shopping on the special tag days and challenge myself to find only clothing that is 50 to 75 percent off. I have some great outfits that cost me less than $2.50 for a complete business outfit (jacket, pants, blouse, shoes). I also like to Garage sale in Communities if it's late in the day on a hot summer day you can really get fall/winter items for next to nothing. Another thing that has helped is to buy off the clearance racks in off-season....buy when there are sales and stock up for the year (underwear/socks).

      Re: Clothing Costs

These are great posts and they are helping me think about these issues. I am still a little confused on one issue.
Do you consider shoes and purses to be part of a clothing budget or a separate accessories budget?

I do. My $458 last year included a couple pair of Danskos (great shoes but not cheap).

I don't include jewelry. When I'm not on my Challenge, I can spend up to $300 a year. It's more hobby/special interest though; I could certainly never buy jewelry again and have enough. But I love to buy pieces when I travel; silver earrings in oaxaca, amber pieces in Krakow, etc. They are souvenirs, in a way.

          Re: Clothing Costs

this year I have barely bought clothes at all. However when I do I usually shop clearance racks.

I also can't wear just anything. I am very picky about the clothes I wear, and purses for that matter

I rarely find any pants at all in my size at carport sales POUTING!
I do go to goodwill and there a few times I have managed to find gap tall boot cut jeans in 4 tall! They fit well.......
See, Its been like 10 years since I went to stores like gap, buckle, or all them fancy stores. Pennys and Sears I admit! Boy! I am country fried! HAHAHA
I just wait till someone outgrows there clothes and I pray they are good natured enough to donate to a resale or goodwill etc....That way I can buy for my budget! There has been years where I haven't found a thing! Other times my basic black skirt has many styles when put with a differant pair of shoes costume jewelry etc....

              Re: Clothing Costs

i think i posted in another thread estimating that i spend about $100 a year buying mostly from yard sales (underclothes come from ROSS)... this is for clothes, shoes, accessories, purses, and play jewelry.... it could be way lower but, like pearl, i am somewhat of a clotheshorse and love clothing... clothing/beauty is the one area where i allow myself to spend money on a want... for me, it is gratifying to spend $1 or less on something i might wear many, many times throughout the years and get complimented on to boot...
and i do have lots of nice stuff as i have been about this size for 10 years and tend to hang onto things that are non-trendy... mostly i end up buying casual clothes because that is what everybody wears here in hawaii...if i ever needed nice business clothes i might be forced to go thrifting or retail clearance but even many of the workplaces in hawaii are fairly casual so my button down shirts pass muster...

also, when i get tired of clothing i don't feel too bad since most of the time it's under $1... i pass it along to my SIL or friends who are similar sizes and aren't as fortunate and are generally appreciative... i also sell some and make maybe $20-30....

ps. i forgot to add that for non-costume jewelry my needs are simple and have been met for years... i've never really actively sought jewelry as itaren't a priority for me... i am lucky to have family members that sell jewelry so i can never bring myself to pay retail...
aside from my wedding ring, most of my jewelry is gifts that i received from my mom and others years ago... the bracelets on my right wrist i've had since 8th grade... the jade on my left wrist i've had for at least 3 years now (i can't remember)... all the bracelets are meant to be worn at all times... those and my wedding ring... that's all i wear...
