I read the article in the paper. They are getting rid of it because very few people use it anymore and it is costing them a ton of money to maintain the layaway department for a handful of customers. The department usually has 3 employees so about 10,000 workers could be affected by the change.
The article also said that layaway is used mainly by the poorest customers who don't have and may not qualify for credit. But Wal-Mart is hoping some of those people will get in-house credit cards, which, of course, would generate more income for the company.
