  • Pesky neighbours, co-workers may actually cost you

Ever had a pesky neighbour or a co-worker who always tries to get something for free?
    I have had both!
    1) This neighbour always needs something :" key to the laundry room"
    "Old newspapers"
    "Bread"
    You name it.
Just to get Pesky off of my back , i give him whatever I can.

2)Another problem: subtle messages dont work with Pesky.
In 6 mos, I have never visited Pesky. I dont want to be rude but Pesky should have gotten the message by now.

A neighbour asked me if Pesky is related to me and I recoiled in horror. Related to a freebie seeking, time-guzzling insensitive person. No way.
The worst part: Pesky is a snoopy gossip. ICK. I could not work for 2 hours every fortnight because of the extended special report on people.

    Now for colleagues:
Jason is a fresh college grad who used my workspace very often.
Wanted to try the 4 different kinds of teas I had.
Wanted me to make him coffee even though he is my junior.
Always wanted to eat my lunch.
"Hey Camryn , did you put ginger in that? Cause I can smell it!"
Cost me 45 mins EVERY day until I sent the most scathing report on his work.
Are you being bothered by such people? Please share.

I replied to Ima about such a neighbor in one of these threads... I'm not sure where exactly though, it might be on a blog or something.

This woman would come in my house and yack, and yack and yack! I couldn't get moved fast enough! Whatever you had she could buy cheaper yada yada yada or hers was better.

Had to get The Hubster to put opaque glass in my garage windows so she couldn't see if my car was in the garage! I'd peel around the corner while pushing frantically on my automatic garage door opener to get in and get the door slammed down before she could see me arriving home. We lived with the drapes closed most of the entire time we lived there! OMG I was so happy to sell out and move on!!

She would not - could not - refused to take a hint!

Oh yes, I relate so much. We have a Mr. Pest!! You see my husband and I like to go out and eat alone at night. We make it a date. We sit right next to each other, hold hands, have cocktails and just talk about our day.
Now we have Mr. Pest!! He comes in a few minutes after we do, and sits with us. We don't want anyone to sit with us. He never eats, just blabbers the whole time. (He is also Mr. no personality too) This is not every night, but several times a week, usually Tues. and Thurs. Ok, we found another restaurant! We have very conspicious cars, and he finds us no matter where we go.

To make it even worse, Mr. Pest shows up with Mrs. Pest about once a month on a sat. night to join us for dinner. Never asks, never calls, just shows up!! She is a 100 times more boring than her husband.

They have parents here, a brother and SIL here, a son here, and who did they chose to come and eat with on their anniversay, US!!

I know how you feel, we feel like moving too. Oh and now, he comes to my husband's jobs every few days to talk about his house!!!

Thank you. Peskies attack our homes. Colleagues like " Jason" make life so terrible.
Had I had an annoying neighbour like that I would have written to her requesting her to keep away. I am moving. So I wont say much to Pesky. But one more month and the message would have found its mark!
These people make it so difficult to be polite.
Pesky wanted me to take care of his toddler and I said " I will never change diapers or give baths" in the coldest tones possible. Pesky now knows that he is dealing with a short tempered neighbour. How dare he! free babysitting!? #$@#$@.. I could go on.

My BEST Friend in High School...she did not have a good life when she was growing up...so I helped her out alot and so did my parents...but she was working two jobs she never once offered to pay for anything! She took advantage of alot of things that she could get from people for free...she did I think said "Thank you" at least, I cannot remember that was too long ago...

If I had neighbors like that, here is what I would do. We fenced our yard when we were robbed and had two dobermans. No one ever came in our yard again. We kept the gates padlocked!!

              YIKES
let me take a minute to be thankful for my nice next door neighbors

BUT, we have some new diagonal neighbors. They live in a 2 fam and are ALWAYS on their porch. They watch us all the time. How do they know when I am about to look out the window or out a door? Hope they are not casing my house ;-P

Ima, DrF, you guys are such great spouses!
                holding hands etc. so sweet!
Ima, I relate to your problem too! Our pest has killed our plans several times.
Mr. Pesky has ruined so many afternoons and evenings.
The other day when WE were in a jam, does Mr.Pesky help out? No! Just drives away. Hubby, who never lets a single mistake of mine go by, lets this slide.
I am furious. I hate moochers. I did not have money to buy a molecular evolution text book in school. I borrowed from the library and used the net. Scraped through. Never asked for a freebie.

                  Pesky is so vulgar!
                  ICK!
I am used to some very genteel decent high-class researchers. My boss's mentor is a Nobel Laureate. Along comes Mr. Vulgar no-class. My mum forces me to **behave** to this day!
I regret having met him at all. Rest of the neighbours are OK. (80% are very decent.) Except for Pesky and a loud lady from another continent, all neighbours behave themselves.
                  Sorry Jaq!

Re: Pesky neighbours, co-workers may actually cost you

You are just too nice. I lived next door to a pest of a neighbor and I just told him stright out, "I am busy, an you are annoying me" Ima, just tell the jerk to get lost! Unless for some reason you need her/his goodwill then just tell them to go away. Don't hint, don't be subtle.

Why do people think they need to be polite to someone who is being inconsiderate or rude?

I had a man, a complete stranger walk up to me on the street and comment on my smoking, I said "That is one of the rudest comments I can imagine, do I comment on your personal habits? The way you dress, or your weight? What gives you the right to say something like that to a total stranger?" He apologized and left me alone.

Life is to short to mess with these bozos. Sometimes if you work with them you have no choice but otherwise...

                      Jaquelyn,
A colleague forced my to pay for his $3.00 expresso drink. Next week, I got even. Some people go out of their way to be kind. Some try to take advantage of our decency.

                        You said it!
I often tell my mom: life is too short to be subtle and classy!
When my mom's tutee did not pay tuition , I pasted a note on their door in bold letters: Please Pay the tutition. You owe me LLL amount!"
signed xyz. Brought his parents to their senses. Mom was paid immediately and she stopped taking on students at home.

Thank you Lux. Tell my mom that!
When I stood up to my inlaws, she , for the first time in 25 yeras, stood up to hers!!!
She did tell me that she likes it when i stand my ground. My inlaws have never messed with me. If you read my little story of being cheated by the shopkeeper you will understand that this has to be genetic.

My problem, dear lux, is that i get exhuasted after fighting these rude losers.
But thank you so much. Some one has to fight for their money and rights.

The reason I have not been rude to Mr. Pest is that about 2 years ago, he approached us about building him a house. I was hoping that it would never go thru, but it did. My dh just started the house about a month ago. So I will have to put up with him butting in at our private dinners. It is making me rethink about eating home!!
