    Re: Saving Money Ideas Degrading?

I agree that none were degrading, but to get the list from an employer (ex-employer) was in extremely bad taste. Someone did probably just think it was being helpful, though.

      Re: Saving Money Ideas Degrading?

Some ideas that to me are very normal are not normal to others. I'm still reeling after reading in another thread that a person would not shop at a thrift store.

I like sushi and I like ice cream. Now I totally understand when when someone doesn't like sushi, but it's harder for me to understand when people don't like ice cream.

With saving ideas, it seems like what I thought was ice cream is sushi to some people. Thrift stores make so much sense to me-great stuff for very low prices. But I'm seeing that for other people, they are almost taboo.

It's always interesting to learn we have assumptions that are wrong.
None ofd the ideas is degrading to me but I'm starting to see that my view is not as common as I thought.

People are funny about the things they do or don't find acceptable. Like people I know who won't buy discounted meat or produce, even if it's to be used the same day. Makes no sense to me but . . .

The stigma of "used" is deeply ingrained in the minds of many. Even Cadillac advertises their "pre-owned" inventory. So much classier than selling a used car.

The list is not degrading. The context it was given is somewhat offensive!

If you look at this website, just about every idea has been suggested. Most of us probably incorporate alot of those ideas. I don't find it degrading ( I couldn't see the entire article) but the employer was thinking that they would probably be helpful.

Please print the article instead of links. Many links don't allow you to read the article unless you register and I am not interested in doing that.
I agree with the rest. The situation is what made it offensive. And, the company should take it's own advice on saving money.
As for any degrading money savings, I would say Dumpster Diving would not be on my list. I would think this would be illegal and dangerous as well. And, I don't pull things out of other's trash. If they don't want it, I doubt it is something I would want either. I am trying to declutter my own home so I don't bring in anymore stuff.

You are correct that trash picking and dumpster diving are illegal in some towns so be aware of local law before doing this.

As for your statement about, "if they don't want it, I doubt it is something I would want either," you may be mistaken there. People throw out all kinds of stuff, not just things that are broken or damaged or worn out. Many people will put things out to the curb just because they are tired of them or they decided to redecorate. The items might be in perfect condition. I've even seen people throw out brand new items presumably because they didn't need them and were too lazy to return them.

Go to any college campus at the end of the school year. You will find thousands of dollars worth of furnishings that students leave behind because they simply don't need them, can't transport them home for the summer and don't want to pay to store them.

Many businesses will toss out great equipment because they decide to upgrade. I've gotten perfectly good computer monitors out of the trash because the business went to flat panel monitors and discarded their CRT monitors.

Drive around most any decent neighborhood on trash day and you may be surprised by what you find at the curb.

                  Re: Saving Money Ideas Degrading?

Like everyone else, the context is what makes this whole thing degrading. Suggestions like "Iron your own shirts" and "Make your own coffee" seem to imply that these people have been living extravagant lifestyles, with maids to do these basic tasks for them, instead of living just like regular joes who know how to plug in an iron by themselves.
