Give to goodwill the thirftstore or checkout freecycle in your town.
Some of these places will even come and take off your hand.

Saw a lot of nice stuff this morning while on my walk but,was all to big and heavy to
drag home....need a car...every thing get hard when your only way of geting aroumd is
the bus or taxie .

I thought everyone curb-crawled. I lived in a rural town of 5000 for 20 years. Everything on the curb was fair game. An acquaintance of mine got thick styrofoam panels to use to block the cellar windows in an old farm house in the winter. In the town i live in now, there is a town pickup every 4 months. EVERYBODY puts the stuff out a day or two ahead so that people have a chance to come by and take the stuff they can use. If you live near a college campus, the ONLY time to furniture shop is right after finals!!! lynclarke

Several years ago on my way to Bible study, I arrived at the apartment complex and a old wooden highchair was sitting out by the dumpster in the rain with a trash bag of newspapers in the seat. As it turns out, the highchair I rescued is an antique and I have been offered as much as $375 for it by someone looking to buy our house last year.

Last week a neighbor was getting rid of a BodyFit exercycle--they just had it sittin gon the curb with a sign "Free". My husband is going to be working in another city for a few months and we will be getting him a small apartment for less money than what he'll get for the temporary assignment. So this FREE perfectly good 1 year old-hardly used exercycle will keep DH healthy and save the cost of a gym membership! And I offered a few hours of free babysitting while they moved across town since we got the bike! She was thrilled!

My husband and I do it all the time. Not to mention picking up goodies off the side of the road too! (Safety first, of course!!)

No, but I stole a dog once. It was at a house next to an old house we had converted into an office. The people kept the puppy tied up all day on shoelaces tied together. It had no food and water and it cried all day.
The 2nd day, I stole that puppy, took it home, and washed 4,813 fleas off of it, it was eaten up! Then I found a good home for it!

DH has gone to the dumps and ended up coming back with things other people were about to dump, like bicycles and hundreds of brand new pens and other new office supplies.

Good for you. Your husband is a very lucky man for having a thrifty wife like you.
Did you ever go to a produce shop called McGruder's in MD? They have 1 qt/lb strawberries for as little as $1.49 some times.
Keep up the good work with curbside recycling!!

Looks like no body is calling the law on me!!

We should call the law on people who DONT recycle, Ima. They cause toxins to be released cause landfills and so on.

We were shifting and the old couch didn't suit the new house.

We offered the couch to the neighbour across the road who happily took it.

About an hour later we saw another neighbour from up the street struggling to move our old couch to his place and then returning with their old couch.

It turned out that the person we had given the couch to had done a swap.

The end result was that everyone was happy!

Good question!! We got a great 1940ish black & white enamel top table (SOOOO CHIC!!) out of the dumpster at the storage unit place -- no, don't worry - it was only a temporary storage as we moved LOTS of junk there before a move to make our tee-tiny house look bigger during the sales period. That was all B.F. - (before Flylady! see Flylady.net)!! Anyway that table is in the basement waiting on soon to be launched youthful son to have for his first apartment.

Last year, we got a nice little pile of fireplace wood that we passed on to my parents!

Now for the question I have been dying to see discussed here: how many of you have rescued sunday coupon inserts ( in sunday newspapers) by dumpster diving?

In my town, once a year, we have "Big Trash Day" where you can put out furniture, appliances, whatever and the garbage men will take it without any complaints. Well, people usually start piling the stuff on their curbs a few days in advance so people can peruse it. Everyone gets their pickup truck and canvases the neighborhood! My fiancee and I have gotten furniture for our house this way, and my fiancee is great about seeing the potential in someone else's garbage. There is no shame in it.

I recently decluttered our house (thanks to FLYlady, too!), and some stuff we didn't have room for anymore, we were able to sell! So it went from being garbage to being used by us, to making us money, instead of ending up in the landfill.

Imasaver - Good for you for rescuing that puppy! I "stole" a cat from my neighbor! Long story short, they have 5 cats that are poorly cared for, and the sweetest little kitty decided we were much nicer. I got her shots and dewormer (cuz ewww did she need it) and a collar and tag with OUR phone number on it! The neighbors haven't said a word, they're probably thinking, "Good, one less cat to feed!" But we love her so much.
