  • Quality vacuum

We had 2 old vacuums that died within a few weeks of each other. They were both cheapies, but did the job for many years. I'm torn between buying another cheap one and hoping it holds up as well as the previous ones, and spending the money for a quality machine.

    Suggestions?

I'm never buying a cheap vacuum again. It is just a waste of money. I'm pretty sure I have posted before about my Riccar vacuum. I love it. I got the Supralite premium because I liked the color and it is light enough for me to carry up the stairs with one decrepit hand. I spent an outrageous amount, but they make cheaper models that get great reviews. It easily beat my Dyson in regard to performance, too. Made in the USA!

I don't think cheap vacuums are worth buying. They typically have inferior cleaning power and flimsy filtering that basically sucks up the dirt and sprays it back out into the room which kind of defeats the purpose.

We've got a Hoover WindTunnel which is great but heavy. We also have a Dyson which isn't as powerful as the Hoover but is much easier to move around and does a satisfactory job.

I like my Dyson, my wife likes her Shark.... and ne'er betwixt shall the two meet. Honestly, both do a good job. Each of us bought what we have before we met/married, but we hung on to both, and now it's actually rather handy -- one stays upstairs, one stays downstairs. Works!

Some friends bought a Kirby... They're obsessed, and I'll admit that it does a great job (at one point they insisted that I try it out)... But the 3x premium beyond even my Dyson (which was about 3x the cost of DW's Shark) is not nearly worth it, at least for us.

          Have 2

I have an older Dyson upstairs and a Shark downstairs. I don't like the Shark as much as I thought I would. It falls over a lot when using the hose and is hard to push on my area rugs. I've never been unhappy with the Dyson except that it is not very stair friendly (the main reason that I bought the lighter-weight Shark).
