  • How I buy online for less

I tend to like buying things online, as you see a wide selection, can shop from the comfort of your own home, and can easily browse various sellers to find the best deals.

One thing I like to do is that whenever I buy something from a website/visit a site that I think I may want to buy again from there in the future, I sign up for the emails/join the club or whatever it is. These go straight to the promotions tab in my inbox and I don't look at them - until I want to buy something, then I open that tab and search for whatever I want to buy. Fairly often, I discover a promotional code I can use! I find this especially useful for photogifts, there's almost always something on offer, and when I want to give a photogift I look and see what's on for cheap

Another trick is if you don't have a promo code - just before you checkout, google 'company_name + promo code 2017'. You may just discover a valid code - and you can't lose anything by trying! I actually saved 20% off some expensive train tickets though this method recently.

On eBay, you can contact the seller directly to see if they'll offer you a better deal. Here's an article I discovered recently about saving money on Amazon and ebay, it's got some pretty good tips.

One final tip is to always pay with a card - even if it's just one penny of the total cost - as that way you're covered should anything happen, as opposed to paying with Paypal where there are no safety features.

Interesting. I heard, too, that if you put the items in your cart and then leave the website, they will often send you an email offering a discount on your cart contents.

Unless the listing has a "best offer" option, doing this would actually be in violation of ebay policy. If a seller closes his auction and sells the item privately, he is breaking the rules and can be banned.

Your other tips are good, though. I have also searched for discount codes and found some several times.

There is also shopping through cash-back portals. I use Ebates most of the time, but sometimes shopping through your credit card company's portal may earn better rewards. I wait for Ebay to have the ebay bucks specials, then shop through Ebates and use my credit card associated with Paypal to get more points. Triple dip!

Don't forget to pay for it with a discounted "Gift Card Granny" gift card, or at least a credit card with cash back.

I also always do a Google search for coupons. Often I'll get 15% off and free shipping for new customers.

One of my favorite savings tips. I've posted about that here a number of times.

I like that one! It's got a touch of cheekiness, reminds me of my father's bargaining tips - walk out and they chase after you. After seeing him in action several times, I know it works. I just didn't know it works online too

Oops betrayed my ignorance, I prefer Amazon personally. That tip was from my brother (he's that sort of guy, one who was buying on eBay and selling on for HUGE profit while still at school). I think he meant when items are not on auction, and/or if they have a large supply of them.

                Thanks for pointing that out!

Sorry to hear that but I appreciate that you posted about it. I have been monitoring flights on Southwest and totally forgot to look for discounted gift cards. I have done so in the past but not consistently every year like I should.

Go through EVreward to see what points or cashback you can get on a particular website by using a shopping portal.
