  • Cutting household costs way down

Husband loves his tv. As a result, since we have been married, we have had the most expensive dish package there is.... I challenged him to give it up. So, we made a deal. We put dish on pause for 3 months and got an antenna/converter thing for $29. Husband then discovered MeTV (I think thats the name of the antenna channel) that shows all the old shows--Hogans Heros, Emergency, Perry Mason..... and he loves it. 3 months have now ended and he tells me to disconnect the dish completely. $104 a month saved, for a total yearly savings of $1248.

I have been changing all the bulbs in the house. Most were CFL, a few were still the old style bulbs. I got some free Amazon gift cards for several hundred dollars from surveys, and used those to buy new LED bulbs. Now I have the electric bill down to under $100 a month, half of what it was. So, another savings of $1200 a year. We have (as of last month) all energy star saving appliances. Kids have all left home (except for holidays and some weekends) so the water bill is down to the $30's (had been close to $100 per month), so another $840 per year savings. We don't have a sewer or trash bill. So, our home utilities now total around $125 per month.

We have been supplementing our propane furnaces with burning wood, so we are only on our 2nd propane tank for the winter. I did a summer fill and that gave us a huge discount on the first tank.

Now, I just need to figure out how to get the ATT bill down. We have a family plan with 5 lines, although one line is on military suspension as that daughter is deployed and can't use it where she is at. With her line, its around $250 per month, without her line is around $220 per month. ATT seems to be the only company that halfway works in this rural area, so switching really isn't an option.

Our internet (comes thru a satellite) I usually get for free, as I do surveys to cover it ($49 per month) or I tell other people what a great company it is (we have never had an outage) and if they sign up I get a free month.

By next year, we hope to have a well pump house built, and then we can go 100% on our well water, and eliminate the water bill entirely. After that project is complete, I would like to put some solar panels on the roof of the house and barns, and see if we can go off grid.

You have done an amazing job cutting expenses.

Curious if you have researched solar panels? A relative has received several estimates and the break even was a lot of years.

I especially love your story of changing tv! That is a huge savings. Cell service is a hard one in rural areas, isn't it?

Solar Panel + installation cost upward to $20K.

I recently heard Money Mustache will be putting up solar panel for $100 bucks a panel with his buddy electrician for real cheap DIY style.

Live in rural Missouri also and went through the same ordeal in 2012. Fortunately, I can get DSL service which doesn't place limitations on usage so I use the very few channels I can consistently receive with the antenna coupled with a roku and later added a g box both which is used through an internet connection. I also have a land phone because it was free add on with my DSL.

Without knowing your cell phone usage I really cannot give suggestions but my family only uses one tracphone dedicated for voice only supplemented with sub $50 Amazon fire tablets to use free wifi when its available. The tracphone is pay as you go and costs a little less than 10 cents a minute.

I am super proud of you in finding a way to make the cable digestible to your husband. It is amazing what a challenge will do! I have a few things that my husband can’t seem to get rid of too. My current challenge is to make my homemade yogurt taste like Yoplait.

I am also super impressed by the way you self-fund things. That is something that absolutely LOVE to do! I don’t have many examples, but I’m working on creating them.

I've heard good things online about Republic Wireless, but I've never actually met anyone who uses it. My concern is that it would be a huge cyber security threat.

I’m very jealous of your well. We aren’t allowed to dig one in our city. I’ve been complaining about water rights, but to no avail.

Yesterday, I came across a checklist by the busybudgeter of 200 ways to save. I can’t directly link you to it since I don’t have hyperlink privileges yet, but it is worth looking up. You print off the list, check off the ones that are already part of your life, pin it up somewhere, and work on checking off the rest.

            KEEP IT UP!

You can still use the AT&T network when using prepaid phones like Tracfone. You just need to check the code on the phone before buying. I think the code is GSM-A, but I'm not positive. There are websites devoted to comparing prepaid phones and the carriers. I wish we could switch to prepaids, but my sisters text every little thought in their heads and would eat up my minutes. My husband refuses to change, so there is that as well.

I'm not sure if you know this, but prepper websites usually have quite a bit of information regarding going off grid. I found a lot when researching solar panels for our home.

                .
Can you tell which surveys you do ? Interested, I have a lot of idle time during the day while at work, a lot of hurry up and wait type of scenarios...

I use Swagbucks, I like it because you can do more than surveys. You can earn points watching videos, playing games and searching.
