  • Saving money for next semester's tuition

I posted on here a couple weeks ago about how I suddenly found out I owed my school $487 and was trying to figure out which payment plan I should sign up for. I decided to go for the monthly payments ($121.75 till it's paid off). I won't be done with the payments until November. I work part-time all year round, so I knew I'd be able to pay off the debt and continue with my bills. But money is going to be really tight. And if I have an emergency of any sort (car, pet, me) I'm screwed. So I was hoping I could get help coming up with a budget.

Here are my current monthly bills:
    -$12 Pet insurance
    -$85 phone bill
    -$121.75 tuition payment
    -$50 car insurance

That all adds up to $268.75, we can just round it up to $269. But that doesn't include toiletries, gas, rabbit supplies (food, bedding, etc) and entertainment. Right now I don't drive much (I work right around the corner from where I live so I typically walk), I only spend $10 a week for gas. But when school starts I figure that'll jump up to $20-25 a week (only a 10 minute drive).

To help myself out with the financial burden (and I'm always worried about emergencies) I decided to get a second job. I'll be taking notes for special needs students at the college I go to. It'll give me an extra $200 or so a month. So that, along with my other job ($275 a paycheck, $570 a month), my income will be around $770 a month. I was thinking of tossing all the money from the second job into a separate bank account to save it all for next semester's tuition

There's still some major expenses I have to worry about; books, fix the side-view mirror on my car, fix my phone screen and buy a new screen protector. I have no clue how much the books will cost, I'm hoping I can buy most of them used online for cheap, I don't even know what books I need yet. I need a new side-view mirror, should cost me around $50. I need to get my phone screen fixed soon, it's just getting worse and worse. I have a couple different options for this. My phone provider will replace the entire phone for $200. A phone screen repair place will fix just the screen for $165, and Apple will supposedly fix the screen for $105, but I'm not sure if that's just for AppleCare customers or what?

The phone I had before this, the screen cracked so I went to a cheap place to get it fixed but then I had software issues after that. So I'm kinda leaning towards going to my phone provider, because I'll have a brand new phone. That is, if I can afford it. Also when I got my previous phone fixed by a 3rd party, the software issues started and I could hardly use the phone. I tried to take it back to my phone provider to get a replacement but they wouldn't take it because I voided the warranty by taking it elsewhere to get fixed.

Okay, sorry I'm rambling. So my expenses, income and all is provided. Can anyone help me with coming up with a budget plan so I can survive this school year? Also, my family is going on a cruise in May '16, one ticket would cost me $1500. If it's possible do you think I'd be able to save up for that or no? Thanks!

    1. Get rid of the car. No gas, no insurance, no repairs needed. Take the bus, bike, or move closer. You're young.
    2. Don't fix the phone. Wait until the damned thing eventually dies before you reach for your wallet. Use cellophane in the mean time.
    3. Pet insurance? Cancel it.
    4. Entertainment? Find free stuff to do.
    5. A cruise for $1,500? Skip it.

Save as much as you can. Let us know in 6 months how much you've saved.

        But that doesn't include ...
Those are part of your monthly expenses, and thus should be counted as such.

We we were in financial straits, I had the idea to start using the debit card for every purchase. That way, I could download all monthly spending into a spreadsheet and categorize it. You'd then be able to figure out where you can cut expenses.
