  • Do you change out clothes seasonally?

If your closet space feels tight or disorganized, if you can't find what you want quickly, you might benefit by a review or even a seasonal change out of winter garments to spring/summer garb. All the research confirms we wear 20% of our clothes, 80 % of the time. I suggest...

Sort your things into three categories:
    Category 1: I use it. I love it and/or it's useful.
Category 2: I don't use it. I don't love it, bad memories attached,
Category 3: I'm not sure. (But TRY your best to put your items into category 1 or 2] You should not have most of your items in this pile. In fact, it should be the smallest pile.
Take Action: Category 1 items go to appropriate place for continued enjoyment and use.

Category 2 items should be sold, re-gifted or donated if they're in good condition so someone else can use and enjoy.

Category 3 items need a 'Holding Box' Stored in out-of-the way, secondary storage. Note 'Holding Box' in cell phone's calendar 4 months in the future. When you see 'Holding Box' on your calendar, whatever you have not retrieved from that box goes to charity or trash...you didn't miss it

Keep asking… ‘Does it fit & flatter? Do I feel good wearing it? How much is enough?’ If the answer is negative or if it has unpleasant memories it is automatically Category 2. Let it go, drop in a bag for the charity shop of choice; take it to the car for drop off.

*Anything stained, ripped, torn, elastic sprung etc. goes to trash. missing buttons, zipper broken, hem down gets 2 pay cycles grace for repair. Not done, it will not get done, drop into trash, sum spent will not ever come back...goodbye.

A shoe rack hung over the door is easy and keeps the floor clear. Alternatively, attach rods 6” above baseboards in the closet for shoes. Designate top bureau drawer for items worn the most like underwear, socks.

If closet space allows hang 3 out-of-season garments per hanger at the back of the closet. Alternatively, fold into compression bags, sometimes called space bags, and store out-of-season stuff under the bed or on a high shelf until the snow and cold temperatures return. It's such a relief to walk into your closet knowing every items fits, flatters and is in good condition.

Another trick for knowing what clothes to keep, for hung clothes, is to take everything out of your closet and then put it all back with the hangers on the rod backward. As you wear items and return them to the closet, the hanger goes in the right way. In a certain amount of time (varies depending on your lifestyle and your seasons, but at max one year) anything that's still on a backward hanger gets donated or tossed. If you haven't worn it in a year, you don't need it taking up space in your closet!

The only significant changes to my wardrobe seasonally are that I wear short sleeve dress shirts to work in the warm months and long sleeve the rest of the year. However, even during the warm months, I still wear long sleeves with a suit or if attending any type of dress function. The other change is that I will wear shorts during the summer.

I don't actually change my closet or drawers seasonally as I have no need to. Everything fits just fine where it is and I don't really have anywhere else to put the stuff anyway.

Yes I change my clothes around winter/summer and I dread the job every season. I either have too many clothes or not enough room to keep them in (I suspect it's too many clothes). I have a dresser and all the clothes come out of those drawers to make room for the upcoming season. About half my clothes in my closet get rotated out also. Right now since all our bedrooms are taken up with kids, I have a 50 gallon bin that all shirts, sweaters go in, and a plastic storage armoire in my basement that the hanging closet clothes go into. Maybe another 5-7 years before our oldest flies the coop and I can reclaim her closet

And shoes, well we all have stinky feet so no shoes allowed in the house. In the garage along the wall we have milk crates stacked 3 high, 6 across, all the shoes are out there. And yes I have to rotate those too, ugh! Winter boots and shoes go in bins in the basement and the summer sandals and flip flops come out. And don't forget all the sports shoes; soccer cleats, football cleats, baseball cleats, basketball shoes, track shoes I think that's it, those get rotated too. Geez I'm going to have so much room when the kids are gone.ha

        What a pain uh?

I change my clothes seasonally because I have a small closet. I have lighter weight clothes for spring and summer.

no, my job job was a step above business casual, I would say. I wore lots of 3/4 sleeve tops that worked well for 3 seasons, short sleeve in summer. Pants stayed the same all 4 seasons, except the addition of capris in the summer. A few dresses for summer, a few for the other 3 seasons. Everything layered.

I could not fit my yearly wardrobe in my old house in my BR closet. Here I can. Switching out clothes was a pain since so many were 3 season. I keep my shoes on a rack that holds 36 pairs out of sight, no point separating by season as I did not completely fill the rack.
