  • Getting Value from Smart Phone

I'm on a tear to reign in spending and meet goals set back in January just as spending for the holidays season begins. 1st on my agenda is to get better value from my smart phone. While some of the Apps are not yet available here, SA-ers might find something useful.
    o longer late for meetings
1st, we'd discontinued our land phone in order to transfer the same number to the cell [save cost & forced me to use Smart phone & features.
2nd, use the calendar/event feature to stay organized, pay bills two business days before due date, event registration deadlines, family schedules, no longer late for meetings, no last minute purchases; heads off expensive mistakes & oversights
3rd, eliminated need to update/buy GPS or print Google maps for new/alternate routes & easily combine errands based on location. GasBuddy saves $$,
4th, Coupons on-line, Saving Star app, scan bar code shop Savy app, most stores will meet competitor's price if you show comparative
5th, Money Pass directs to linked ATM, even in other cities, countries
6th, T'ext Club'' sends notices of 'best buy' from your preferred retailers, restaurants and services.

I downloaded Stitcher to my phone and use it to stream personal finance podcasts. There is a lot of good ones like The Radical Personal Finance Podcast; Stacking Benjamins; Freakonomics; NPR Planet Money.

If you are looking for savings, you could eliminate the data plan, and just using the smart phone on Wifi. That won't work if you intend to use your phone to navigate, but the rest of the apps would work with just Wifi.
