  • How can I be less frugal?

My wife and I live very frugally (mostly my doing). We are not rich but we are very thankful for the money we make (about $85k total household). We only go out to dinner for social occasions, a very rare date night, and we do take an annual vacation.

I think I am becoming more frugal than I was and I'm worried if it continues then my wife and I won't be able to enjoy any of our money before retirement. I don't want to be foolish with money and can't see myself as a big Spender, ever. But can anyone suggest ways to enjoy just a little of annual income for a neurotic saver like me?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'very frugal;' since that is so subjective. Are you denying yourself products, services and entertainment merely because you're too stingy to permit yourself that level of pleasure?

You and your wife might each choose two or three 'rewards' each month. Alternatively, you might each have an 'allowance' to spend on each other every month. Why not include entertainment/socializing category in your budget?

Remember that you might not live to retirement, happens all the time. Prepare for the future, but live right now, while you still can.

        Discounted Experiences

Find things you would like to do but can get at bargain prices. For instance, 20-30% discount coupons at nice restaurants or last minute blowout sales on things like cruises or vacation packages.

Spend on things that are valuable to you?

I don't like to buy stuff. I like to spend on vacations and I spend a lot on them. Makes me happy.

Good question --- I personally would say being too frugal is at the point where you feel as if you're basically punishing yourself by skipping out on little things.
