  • Best Tips For Saving Money when Shaving

Do you have any good frugal tips for saving money when it comes to shaving? Would love to hear them.

    At least for men...

Don't shave in the shower with the water running
Don't shave in the sink with the water running
If you can't pick a day or two where you don't shave (mine are Friday-Sunday)
Make your blades last longer by blowing out the water (oxidation even on stainless dulls the blade)
Some people soak the blades in mineral oil to avoid oxidation

Get something called an epilator. It pulls instead of shaves. I have not used one, but if I were a girl, I would try it at least.

Buy an electric razor. I've had mine for years. One-time purchase and no ongoing costs, no shaving cream, nothing. Spend $50 once and you're good to go for years and years.

          Ways to Save on Razors

I just wrote a post on this last week. I hate spending money on razors (almost as much as I hate shaving). Here are my tips:

I purchased the Gillette Fusion Proglide and tested to see how long I could use the razor. I was able to use razor for a full month and it was still sharp. Here are some tips to help you stretch the life of your razors.
          - Change your blade on the first of each month.
          - You can use your cartridge for up to two months. Take a permanent marker and write the letter of the month on each blade (side of the cartridge) to indicate when you should switch to that blade.
          - Order a six pack of blades from Amazon for a full year’s supply. You can even set the order up on auto ship.
          - Don’t skip a day shaving. When I skip a day shaving, I really notice that the blade is not razor sharp. I don’t notice the sharpness of the blades when I shave everyday.

Personally, the issue I have with electric razors is that it's nearly impossible to be totally clean shaven. I'm in the military, so that's something of a necessity. Yes, electric razors give you a just fine shave. I just find that it doesn't last through the day like a blade razor will. I like the ease of use and durability, the shave itself is just lacking for me.

For ways I save on shaving, it's pretty basic...
            - I only replace my razor about monthly. They work just fine for quite a while. Whenever it starts to be less comfortable, that's when I'll change it.
            - I don't don't go for the top of the line razors or shaving cream -- Gillette is sort of the industry leader, and its products have a significant price premium. Other national brands (like Schick), or local/store brands do just fine at almost half the cost.
            - Buy razor cartridges in bulk packages of 6-12 or more -- cost per razor is much less.
            - Otherwise, I hate shaving every day, so if I don't have a specific reason to be clean-shaven (on weekends, on vacations, etc.), I prefer to only shave every 3 days or so, so I suppose that puts less wear on the blades to stay sharper a bit longer.

My experience with cheap razors was very negative. I took one on a trip once and it cut me up bad.

I use Gillette Fusion and Edge aloe gel and I look like a baby face for most of the day. Blades are expensive, but I can get 2 months out of them easy (and I have cro-mag facial hair). Just rub hot water on face to soften whiskers and leave the foam on about 1 minute before shaving...much less wear on the blade and your face!

To extend the life of your razor, dry after use (I pat dry & give it a quick puff of air) and store outside the shower.

Soap or body wash works just as well as a separate shave cream (this is for the ladies ... can't speak for the gents).

I bought a men's electric razor to use on my legs. It is a lower end model of a Norelco. Actually, I bought them for all the guys since they all shave now. Well, sort of...one of the twins has decided that he wants to see how long it takes him to grow a beard. **rolling eyes**

From personal experience, it hurt like heck!

A cheap bottle of conditioner works as well as shaving cream on legs. A little goes a long way.

I concur the electric razor. I use it as maintenance. I typically avoid shaving at all if I don't have to. But I have the electric razor and the suggestion of Oil has kept my same disposable 3 blade razor good for 60 shaves. I use baby oil.

I use a thin candle cup that my wife finished off and have 1 inch of the oil in there. I often only have to shave when getting fit for Respirators and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. So I know the razor still works just fine.

Both my wife and daughter use the electric razor on their legs.
