I put a big priority on preventing wear and tear on our personal durable goods, such as home furnishings. I do it of course, for the objective of using everything for eons (or at least a couple generations) and not having to spend to replace things!
This is the philosophy I've used for our kitchen cabinets. I do things such as cleaning spills within minutes, rubbing with lemon oil furniture product once a year. We bought this house brand new and I have that picture in my memory and strive to keep it in that condition.
But after 15 years the cabinets are slipping past the point of ever being again like new. They are still in very good shape. In fact, I am probably the only one in the family who notices the slight but consistent degrade.
I do not want to paint them nor refinish nor resurface. They are plain oak, no hardware. The corners where a person opens them, in fact, is becoming one of the perpetually worn/gummy spots.
I thought I was the queen of clean. But am not sure what is the very best thing to do to keep these cabinets in tip top shape.
HELP - what do you advise?
