  • Using Ipad to make phone calls?

I have an Ipad and I am a big texter. I seldom use my phone now...
Now I discovered there are services I can use to make phone calls from my ipad too.

Shouldn't I then ditch my cell phone and cell phone service?

    Pros, cons?

I cannot call 911 from the iPad so I will have to store the police regular numbers I guess, jic

    Pros:
    Potentially cheaper
    1 device

    Cons:
data use heavy (not sure you can get a data plan without a phone plan...?)
big and bulky to talk with
may cut out (ie, not reliable)
    battery life

I've thought about this myself, but usually turned it down - in an emergency you don't want to be messing with the ipad. That said, getting a paid phone as a backup might be a good idea, just keep it charged and only use when it's really, really urgent. As long as you can figure out the data, it could be worth a try... (ps, I like text free with voice as my favorite call/text app for apple).

That would be a neat feature to have, but I wouldn't want to depend solely on an I-Pad to make phone calls. Too big and bulky. It reminds me of those old episodes of Miami Vice when the stars would talk on those cell phones that were as big as their head.

Definitely not a good idea if the iPhone is on 3G or the like. Data over a data plan is considerably more expensive then data over a regular phone connection. However, if your iPad is on a LAN or wi-fi network, GooglePhone is basically free. Some prudent calling should help you reduce those costs.
