Of course movies are a large part, because the fact that waiting even a month to see a movie can save you 50% or more, and waiting a year can save you 99%. I've bought used movies on DVD for 50 cents. Assuming it's $50 to see the movie with DW in the theater, that's a 99% savings.
Comment 2: Waiting on electronics
This one is a no-brainer. First adopters are not only paying premium fees, they're also betting on which technology will win. How many folks bought HD-DVD when it was competing with Blu-ray? Those machines were $800, just like the original Blu-ray players, and now they are absolutely worthless.
Waiting on other things:
If you're in a buyers' market, then waiting will save you money, but if you're in a sellers' market, waiting means you might miss out on a good buy. I think that the former is much more likely than the latter, so I wait. One thing I've found is that "whatever goes up, always comes down" does not apply to new car prices. It does, however, apply to real estate on occasion.
