I don't pay for meals eating out

If there were 14 hungry children in front of you that might go without a meal for the entire day and they could be fed a quality hot meal if you were willing to eat somebody elses leftovers for one meal, would you? That is basically a choice you make every time you go out to eat.

This is how I think about it. I grew up extremely poor where there were days I didn't eat. I have plenty to eat now, but there are still plenty of children in our country that don't. I have chosen to save every penny I can so that some of these kids have a hot meal that otherwise wouldn't. That means if I can get leftover meals that are perfectly good that would otherwise go to the dump, I have no problem doing it.

In my opinion, we have become a nation of germaphobes. There is little risk of getting ill from other people's food. I have never become ill in the 5 years I have done this. You kiss your partner. You eat your kid's leftover food. At buffets there are all kinds of chances for people to accidentally sneeze into the food. I just don't see it as a big deal or a health threat any more than many other everyday things.

As I have said, I don't expect anyone to agree with what I do.

So why are you continually seeking guidance and approval on these issues from those at this forum? You asked,"am I too cheap" I think you know that answer. I hope that you really are feeding hungry children. You have my respect if that's the case but so do I and, I'm sure, many others here.

Wanna really feed hungry children? Stop hanging around garbage cans and taking advantage of buisness owners and improve your financial situation to the point that you truly have the means to help others. You're being so cheap that it's nonsensical in terms of helping anyone other than yourself and that's questionable.

This is absurd. I don't believe a word you say.

Congratulations on your nice gradual build up into complete ridiculousness. Start small with the bananas and the cartons of orange juice -- then build into the absolute lunacy that is lurking around trash cans at fast food restaurants and scavenging and begging for six used meals.

        Nice work!

I don't believe you. Why post?

Why ask for validation if you're too cheap? You already know that you are. What are you hoping to receive from these odd gross questions?

I don't seek approval. As I stated in my first post here "I plan to share the strange ways that I save money and if you like them, great. If you don't, that is your prerogative as well." I just assumed that some people might find them useful and it might be a different perspective.

My financial situation is fine. I earn an above average salary. I do it so that I can help even more. I am not hurting the business owner in the least bit. It is your prerogative not to agree with me. I still believe that what I am doing is helpful to others and will continue to do it.

That is certainly your prerogative. I have no ill feeling toward you for feeling this way and you are free not to comment in the future or to continue to do so if you wish.

(sorry, I could not quote completely because I was not allowed to have a link)

I hope you realize that I was not talking about germs in context of history, but in the sense that it is OK to not have everything 100% clean all the time. A little saliva is not going to kill anyone as people kissing each other proves.

I believe I explained above why I post. I decided to do it because I thought it might be helpful to others and give a different perspective I had not seen in my lurking.

I think it's just fine, that is, if you don't mind ingesting other people's saliva, which naturally occurs when an eating utensil is used repeatedly into the same food.

My standards are a bit higher than yours.

So far you're scoring a bit fat zero with that sharing thing.

So if I came by and spit in your food, you'd be okay with that?

Come on... a little saliva isn't going to kill anyone.

                      It is however, really gross.

No. You just stated you don't care. But you're continually questioning if what you're doing is wrong. There seems to be a disconnect there.

You keep posting about gross/odd/cheap things that you do, asking if you're being too cheap. If you're not seeking approval, why are you asking if it's "too cheap?"

Are you just checking to be sure that you are?

Someone who really didn't care, wouldn't bother checkin in. He'd just say: "look, I don't buy food at fast food places, I just ask for leftovers." And that's it. No approval needed.

Possibly, and if it ends up that is the case, I'm fine with it.

I believe that there is a big difference between someone spitting in food and the remnants that are left when someone eats. I realize that some people don't like it when people double dip chips or cut vegetables into dips at parties because a bit of saliva may come off. This doesn't bother me and how I see it.

I think you misunderstood my "Am I too cheap?" at the end of my posts. It is rhetorical since I have already stated I know most people think I am (just like my user name).

I do check in to answer questions that have been posted and to explain how I think. I consider that polite, not seeking approval.

But not from kissing (at times )

If it's just saliva, and you've ever shared a passionate kiss, you should have no problem with someone spitting in your food. Why is that any different?

It's just a larger amount of saliva. Which was after all, your own rationale...

                            Fair enough.

Yes you are too cheap. You are the embodiment of being cheap, as opposed to frugal.

In fact, I'll be using your posts as examples of what not to do in future posts going forward.

"Focus on reducing your largest expenses like housing, car expenses, and interest expenses - rather than doing something absurd like peeling your bananas in the store to save 15 cents, or mooching leftovers off your friends to save on food costs."

As you said, it is my perogative to take a critical view of your approach to savings. I believe I've covered my views on the issue, so best of luck to you.

When someone spits in your food, they are doing so to disrespect you and are putting it in there on purpose. I would mind that. When people eat, they are not actively trying to put large amounts of saliva in your food out of disrespect. I really don't know how much saliva gets in when people eat (I assume not as much as spitting, but I could be wrong). But as I said, like a double dip, it doesn't bother me.

I believe that not wasting perfectly good food is frugal. Focusing on big expenses first is good advice. I have stated that I have already reduced all my large expenses and that is why I am focusing on smaller ones. I, too, wish you the best of luck.

One last thing to remember, with apologizes to other forum member for the imagery: fecal matter left on the hands from those not washing hands after using toilets and then eating. It isn't just gross, it's a reality.
