  • Some people don't have a choice unless they want to walk literally miles a day or pay for cabs. People who live in rural areas have different limitations and opportunities than people in more urban areas.

Would you live without a car? I have been toying with the idea lately, even if just for fun.
Of course I would need to calculate a transportation budget to use public transportation and taxis for emergencies...

what do you think (outside the box)
I would not, nothing beats the freedom of being able to drive anywhere you want.

If I lived in a large city without parking i might consider it.

      • Live without a car?

I would find that very difficult to do.
Although it can be done, unless there is a good public transportation close by then I do not see how someone could go without a vehicle, especially if you work and have to commute.

        • I think the solution is to buy a low cost fuel efficient car that wouldn't cost too much to maintain. Living without a car?. That would be hard.

          • Yes, of course, I can live without a car. Since I am working from home, having a car is not a mandatory necessity for me to have.

            • Depending on where you work and live, no i wouldn't, a car is pretty much a necessity these days, they are expensive but they save you a lot of hassle

              • I think if you live in the right area, this can be done. In some cities, you don't want a car. If you live out in the country or suburbs, it makes it a lot more difficult. I think if these driverless cars ever take off, it would be much easier for everyone to live without a car.

                • We can't go without a car where we live.

But in retirement, we are planning to have one car and only my husband will have auto insurance. In the instance there is an emergency or on rare occasions I need to drive, we'll just risk it. It seems an awfully easy way to save money. But then again, we will be residing in an off-grid town of 200 people so to not crash is quite easy if I lived in a more populated area, well that decision may not be the right choice.

                  • I guess I am beating a dead horse but if you live in a city you need good public transport. LA is not commuter friendly in my opinion whereas New York is great.

A bicycle or a scooter might be good for some depending on their locale. The best bet is to live within walking distance of work but how often does that happen?

When all is said and done it depends on where you live as others have pointed out.

                    • If it was possible in the place I lived in, I would definitely live without a car! However, in the suburbs where I live there is little-to-no public transportation. Then again, public transportation costs are going through the roof as well. Maybe we are all better off just walking everywhere!

                      • I'm pretty sure we can get by on one car, but definitely not "no car". There is no bus and a lot of the busy streets lack sidewalks. The road to get out of our subdivision is one of the busiest roads in the state, and someone almost hits my car every single time I am on it. No exaggeration. I'm positive I would be killed if I was a pedestrian.

I'm very tempted to try the one car route. I will be dropping my car off for the 8th or 9th time next week to get the Eyesight fixed AGAIN. This is the 3rd time for eyesight problems, so I'm looking into lemon laws.

                        • If I'm living in a big Cosmopolitan city like New York, I don't think I will buy a car. It would be better to avail the subway than drive in busy polluted roads.

                          • I live in Portland, Oregon. Portland public transportation takes about three times as long as driving. It is also not that much cheaper than driving.
