It's up to you if the juice is worth the squeeze - personally I don't like being victim of the "hard sell" so if you're willing to fight it out and stand your ground, then I'm sure you could cash in on some great bonus freebies.
You have to figure they KNOW people are only coming because of the lure of free things/tickets/money - so they have to bust butt to try to get something out of everyone who walks in the door. Your friend who's been to so many is probably quite used to it, and has a refusal lined up. It can be unnerving, so you have to decide if it's worth it to you to go through it.
