Cell phone or landline?

Is that cell phone a family plan or an individual? $60 is a lot for an individual plan. I pay $84 (including tax) for my 2 person plan.

If you go shopping for a new plan, pay attention to plans that offer unlimiting calling within network, unlimited calling to 5 people and when their unlimited nights and weekends are. You will find that, depending on how much of a talker you are and who you are calling, these options will allow you to go for a plan with less minutes overall which is less pricey.

Personally, I use wirefly.com to shop for plans since it lets me compare them based on my location. I think there are a couple of other websites like that as well. It sounds like it would be worth it for you to shop around a little.

I've thought about dropping my landline many times, but I just don't feel like cell phone service is reliable enough to replace it. Plus you only get so many minutes on your cell phone before the monthly price jumps to 3 digits.

I was a bit mistaken about my charges. The plan total cost, plus taxes and fees is $45 for an individual. Sometimes texting adds a few more dollars...anywhere from 2-10 dollars in a given month. Doesn't seem like I can get a plan for less than about $45 per month, even if I didn't text at all. So I think I may keep this and get rid of the landline ($25/month).

We decided to dump the landline..no texting on the cell, which lowers the price.

And we could go with a cheaper plan, but we have a plan that includes no roaming (we travel for family up and down the east coast) and no long distance (again family is far away)

Honestly the landlines around here are down about as often as the cell (I actually don't recall the last time the cell was out, but I imagine it was the ice storm of 2 years ago..)

My wife and I pay about $80/month for a family plan. We get the lower minute plan since verizon to verizon calls are free and we got our families to switch as well.

We do have a baby and I refuse to get rid of my land line because I am paranoid and want it for emergencies, and I don't want to have a dead battery or some other stupid problem delay me if she needs fast assistance. Even with that, we only total about $100/month for all of our phone service.

That is the same thing with many of us, though I don't have much use of the landline still I prefer to keep it. My cell is on individual plan which costs me around $50/month and if something is not that important I prefer text messaging.

I also try to text a lot as I have an unlimited text plan. However, since I work from home occasionally and am on call, I need the land line. My company reimburses my cell up to a certain limit, but with 2 lines I go over that limit already. Add on to that the 1000 minutes I use per month just for work and it would cost me more for a higher cell plan than adding on my Comcast VoIP line for around $35/month.

Check with your local police department, a lot of cities allow 911 calls even on an unactivated land line.
