Cleaning the Bathroom

I thought I'd share how I clean my bathroom because it's to easy, and I think cheap too!

After showering, I only have a shower stall, I squeegee the shower door. Then I dry it with a washcloth. I then spray shower spray in the stall. I never get mildew, & I only need to clean it every 1 to 1 1/2 years!

I then take the slightly damp washcloth & wipe out the bathroom sink & fixtures. Keeps it shiny clean. I also wipe down the sink after I brush my teeth with the same washcloth. The sink is just wet enough to put a shine on it.

For the toilet, I fill a spay bottle with 1/2 bleach & 1/2 water (I'm going to try 1/4 bleach & 3/4 water next time). I then spray the toilet bowl. No more scrubbing. The gunk just dissolves off. When I do clean the toilet, I usually only have to wipe off the dust on the outside.

What do you do with the wet washcloth each day? Do you re-use it throughout the week?

I have kids and use a hand towel to dry the sink area and fixtures most time we are in there, I need a hand towel, cause my kids leave lots of water around when they wash up! Anyway I get a new one every day.

I just hang the wash cloth on the towel rack. I usually wipe out the sink a couple of times a day as I hate water spots. Takes only a second to do. Since the cloth is only used to wipe out the sink, I usually use it for a couple of weeks. I use one that matches the bathroom towels so it doesn't look like a rag hanging there.

Has anyone else had a problem with those bleach type cleaners that sit in the toilet tank and work every time the toilet is flushed?

I used to use a cleaner like that years ago and we noticed that the bleach caused the rubber flap inside the tank to warp and the seal was compromised. The water from the tank was slowly leaking into the bowl.

This resulted in higher water bills and the need to replace the rubber flap. I don't put bleach in the tank anymore. Occasionally I'll use regular bleach in the bowl to control stains and to disinfect.

Clorox sent me some little samples in the mail and one was a packet of those toilet tank tablets with bleach. I'm afraid to use them because I don't want any damage to the flap.

Can anyone tell me if these newer tablets are safe for the flap?

hmm, wheres the flap? I use the bleach things but I wouldn't know if my flap was damaged, works like a charm to keep the thing clean though.

The flap? Maybe I'm not calling it by its correct name, but when you look inside the tank, you'll notice that there's a chain attached to the flush handle. The chain is connected to a round rubber flap. When you push down the flush handle, the chain is pulled up, causing the flap to be lifted, allowing water from the tank to empty into the bowl to flush it.

The bleach cleaners always seemed to warp the rubber and it wouldn't sit flat to seal the opening. That's what caused the constant leak, so we used to be replacing the flap every so often.

Hope this makes sense and if anyone knows of a better name for "the flap" please feel free to correct me. Never too old to learn... :-)

I use the clorox tablets and have to replace the flap alot also watch what other cleaner that you use to clean with most toilet cleaners have amonia in them and this is toxic with used with the bleach tablets gases will pour out if you use the wrong one. A friend of mine was hospitalized for 3 days from these gases

Well, I did finally try the Clorox tablets. They worked pretty well for awhile and then, as I'd expected, the flap had to be replaced. I'm going back to my old system.

BTW, I do know not to combine bleach with other chemicals such as ammonia.

Another cleaner that should not be combined with others is The Works.

I use pickling vinegar in my toilets. It works like a charm to dissolve the hard water (and other) stains. My kids' bathroom gets rather disgusting, but this works really well.

I don't use any of those dissolving tablets, I think it is whatever else BESIDES the bleach or in combination with the Bleach that causes the flap to warp. I, like you have to replace too many of them, before someone else told me the problem.

I do use bleach in the toilet bowl as it is my favorite cleaner. I use it everywhere. And I'm guilty of mixing it with ammonia on occasion, but well ventilated.

One very interesting tip from my side- If you like singing in the shower, try singing while cleaning it. It will help to pass the time.

Great homemade shower/tub cleaner

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here, but thought I would post a homemade shower/tub cleaner that works wonders, and it's cheap! Heat 1/2 cup white vinegar in the microwave. Mix the vinegar in a spray bottle with 1/2 cup blue dishwashing liquid. Spray tub and shower area and let sit for 20 minutes. Wipe clean. It works wonders on mildew and soap scum!
