Hi guys. Does any one know an easy way to taper hair on a man?

    Thanks much!

i cut my DH's hair and even tho his hair is thick and a pain to cut even for stylist i manage ok with a pair of clippers and some patience... it also took practice...
we usually start by deciding where the bottom of the fade/taper should be... then i buzz his hair up to that line all the way around his head...i generally do one side and then the other and meet in the back so i can make sure both sides are even...
from there i start on one side of his head and taper the same way. One side at a time and meet in the back...
i don't know if i can describe exactly how i taper but i'll try... i generally start at the bottom where the hair is shortest and use the clippers to cut a rough fade/taper... then i slowly do this over and over, taking layers off until the hair is the way i want... i hope this helps.. i'll try and answer any questions you have...

I recently started to cut my boys' hair. I can't explain how, but I learned by requesting a video on home haircutting from the library. It was much easier after I saw how it was done, step by step. Good luck!

        Tapering

Hi guys. Please walk me through the tapering step by step. I'm new with the clippers, and it is a bit scarry. What size attachment would I use?
Do I go up as far as the ear?
See years ago when we were in the service, my husband wanted to to trim the back of his head with his razor. Well I set it for a deep cut, not realizing it. The razor was new to me to. Well I took three nice gulges out of his head.
The next day his boss happened to notice it in the mess hall. Said " Wing what the hell happened to your hair'' Then made him go to the barber and get it straightened up. He told them I did it. Well they just laughed because they all knew me. Every time I saw the guys after that they never let me live it down.

So don't want to ever do anything like that again to my poor husband.
The barber did make it look nice. But what a mess.

This is why I say these things are scarry.

I've also tried getting a video at our library. They didn't have one. This is a small library.

A neighbor I used to live by, bought a video, and it didn't show what she wanted. So it was just a waste to her.

        Do appreciate the replys. Thanks!

I've been cutting my own hair with a clipper for about 2 years. I use the #3 attachment and #2 on the sides. It is so simple since with the attachment in place, you can't screw it up. Looks great. Takes about 10 minutes and costs nothing. I bought the clipper 2 years ago for $15 at the Conair outlet store. Has saved me a few hundred dollars already.

              Tapering

Oh yell I can screw it up. Believe me when I tell you. Do you cut straight up with the attachment? Do you cut up as far as the ears in the back?
The problem I'm having is, at the bottom in the back it is sticking out. It isn't laying flat. So I know I need to do something more in this area. I think taper.

              Thanks for helping me guys.

I searched the internet for more than 90 minutes looking for good resources on cutting boys hair and found nothing much! I did write a short article you can find at: How To Cut Boys Hair Follow the link, then click on the purple check on the left side which will show you some Hints and Tips. Finally, an article entitled "4 Easy Steps To Cutting Hair" should help you.

don't worry about learning... i know i made a few mistakes at first and my DH just had to wear a hat... even if you do make mistakes, they will soften and mostly disappear as the hair grows in and then you can try again...

for specifics, i think a lot of it depends on personal preference... my DH likes his fade to start high and super short so i cut it that way... when i first started cutting i think i always used the guards... but now i cut his hair using the razor (with no guard) and then fade it slowly up using the razor without a guard... i've found that as long as i have a steady hand this way gives me more control over the fade...

if you don't know what size attachments you guys want to use, just start with the larger ones and then keep going down in size until the hair is as short as you want... then just start a "wide/big" taper (taking off less hair) and keep taking off hair until it suits you... i think it will come easier with practice and after you become familiar with the shape of his head... when i first started it took me forever to figure out where to start the fade...

                  hope this helps...

Ages ago, the clippers I bought had an instructional video that came with. I used to cut all the kids hair when they were little...cost them only a kiss!

What would happen if you looked on ebay to see if you could find a video/CD for sale there?

                    Here's one about giving flat-tops!

eBay: Flat Top Haircut Instructional Video (item 280090200454 end time Apr-03-07 21:34:33 PDT)

There are others listed under a search of 'haircut video'.

If you are unsure of yourself use a scissors @ first & then use a clipper use the longest guard & go down from there.

GL! My dh now does the buzz cut too, but I was cutting his hair before he went buzz cut too to save us a few pennies. I cut my hair as well, only have it done professionally 1-2x a yr to straighten me out *LOL* Also save the hair & toss it in your flower beds or garden

Thanks Disneysteve for posting how you cut your own hair with the
                        clippers.

I will show my husband that as he bought a deluxe clipper set at
full price and then decided that doing this on his own was not
for him. He has a simple buzz cut so it is not a difficult cut at all.

To maintain a buzz cut with a professional haircutter really adds
                        up quickly.
