Walmart Superstore?

Do any of you shop at the Walmart Superstore? The town in which we are moving has a superstore. I don't know much about them. What do you guys think of the prices?

the prices are ok to great but i found the quality of the meat and veg to be average to sub-par. i personally no longer shop at walmart.

You need to check the prices and sales at the supermarket as well. Sometimes you can do better than at Walmart! Tina makes a good point as well!

I have not liked what little meat I have gotten at Wal mart! I only go a few times a year.

I've gone a few times when I've taken my daugher to college. It was okay, but I still like BJs better.

Wal-Mart's meat selection leaves much to be desired. Shopping grocers' loss-leaders (weekly specials) for meat is the best way to go anyway.

For staple items, packaged foods, canned goods, coffee, drink mixes, dairy, paper products, etc. you would find it very difficult to beat a Wal-Mart Supercenter in terms of pricing. Especially considering some of the off-brand and store brand (Great Value, Equate) choices and the fact that Wal-Mart accepts coupons as well.

I'm not sure what grocery stores up there, but I've never heard of BJs. There is a Meijer that is to be built, but I don't know if that's a rumor or not. Good tip on the meat - thanks for letting me know!

I shop a supercenter Walmart maybe one time out of 25 grocery shops. Only when I'm in the building at my bank's branch and I HAVE TO have something...and don't want to make another stop. I can get much better prices overall at Save-A-Lot or Aldi's.

I also do better at Aldi's or at our local bulk stores. If I shop with coupons and loss leaders, I do better at the supermarkets. If I need something specific, though, that might not be on sale that week, the Wal-Mart probably has the best price.
I hate the crowds and the service at Wal-Mart, so I only go when I need diapers. They are far cheaper for the Wal-Mart generic brand than any name-brand diapers, even with coupons. I might browse the market part of the store when I am there, but I rarely make a trip just for the market.

I'm a Southerner, and we love our Wal*Marts! I am so excited. . . one is opening two miles away from my home in January. The groceries are definitely much cheaper at Wal*Mart than Winn Dixie (where I shop now).

The problem with Aldi is selection. Most of the Aldi stores I have been to are smaller. The produce is typically cheap, but not good quality (the same can be said of Wal-Mart) and the meats, also cheap, are quite poor. Then there's the fact that just based on size of store, they don't have many choices when it comes to individual items. To me, Aldi seems to be a good way to pick up a few items at a great, low price but that's about it. I think most people who shop Aldi also shop another grocer.

That being the case, I don't think any other grocer compares overall, price-wise, to Wal-Mart.

I would still suggest that meats can be had for less and/or better quality at your local grocer's when they are on sale. Some meat is on sale every week at each grocer.

Produce, especially fruit, is something I am picky about. Some things, like oranges and bananas are fine at Wal-Mart. But other things, like grapes, or different varieties of fruit (the not-as-common types of apples for instance) can be had, though at greater cost, in much greater quality at my local Lowe's Foods. At the greater cost is sometimes negated by a sale as well.

One thing I think most all of us agree on, it is probably best to shop more than one location.

I, personally, buy majority of items on the shelves at Wal-Mart. I also get most of my dairy there.

I like to get meat on sale so I shop one of two local major grocers.

Produce, varies. Sometimes I get it at Wal-Mart. If the selection isn't good, I pick up produce elsewhere when I get meat.

I hate the idea of running around to lots of places to save a few bucks, so I keep it simple as possible. In a nutshell, Wal-Mart Supercenter for most things, meat (mainly, on sale) and possibly produce (at least some) at Lowe's Foods. (Since I go there anyway for this reason, I will also pick up any BOGO special(s), etc. that appeals to us.)

At some point, when we out of debt or nearly so, we will return to eating more organic and natural foods and then, frankly, we will buy paper products and cleaning supplies, etc. through Wal-Mart and groceries through Whole Foods, or similar. Of course, when you choose to do this, the grocery budget has to be adjusted upward quite a bit.

I've only bought food at walmart a few times when out of town. But I did not think highly of their produce. It seems to me it was fairly good-looking, but tended toward tasteless, so just not quite right. Acceptable, but not great. I agree with the person who said the Aldi's produce tendence to be of lesser quality, but I'd say not worse than Walmart. Aldi' tends to have more scuffs and bruises, but to have flavor and to be ripe, or will ripen within a couple of days. So, tasty, but not pretty.

my experience is that produce from outdoor markets or stands tends to be less expensive, look better, and taste WAY better. cheapest produce around here is the flea market: limes 10 for $1!!!

We have two Wal-Mart Superstores in our town (80,000 population) and one would think that's the only place to shop. We used to shop at one because of convenience, but I would still have to get our meat somewhere else. After a couple of grocery stores closed because they couldn't compete with Wal-Mart's price cutting, Wal-Mart raised their prices since there was less competition. Plus, the prices at the north Wal-Mart are cheaper than the one on the east side on many items.

I concur with many of the other folks -- check your prices. I shop at one grocery store for most things and do coupons and sales, and then do the loss leaders at others. We do go to Wal-Mart because they are the only store in town that handles the lactose free milk my husband likes, but that's about the only thing we get there.

We just got a new supercenter and I love it. I no longer have to travel to save money on groceries. Kroger can not beat them in price on general food. I don't generally buy generic, the few that I have usually bite me in the butt. So I coupon heavily and try to stay with brand name that I trust
