  • Replace a coat's zipper foot?

Somehow I have lost the foot off of my winter coat's zipper. Can I buy a replacement for it? Would it just clamp on? If so, is it hard to set it precisely right?

That is a tough one for me. I either take it to a tailor or send it back to seller for repair. LL Bean is taking care of zipper on my winter coat!

If the coat is from a national brand you can prolly send it back, all I know of zippers is they are a PIA..so I would first try to use the coat without, does it button over the zipper? or velcro? or actually do you often zip it? (I don't often zip mine at all)

Walmart should have them in the fabric area--are you talking the entire bottom, or just the pull thing?

It is just the pull thing. I don't sew well enough to replace the entire zipper. Yes, I do need to zip my coat. No, there is no other closure. No, it is not a brand that I can return or from a store which would offer any help. Besides, it is probably five years old now.

Here's a website that sells a repair kit for $10. I can't vouch for it. I found it with a Google search. I am sure you can find other sources doing the same thing.

ZRK Enterprises has been the Zipper Repair Authority; How to Fix A Broken Zipper, since 1993. Simple Zipper Repair Kit Solution. Most often, the Slider is the problem, not the zipper teeth, which is a surprise to many. Watch our Videos to learn more.

Curious as to what other suggestions there may be as I got a jacked for my toddler @ a rummage & didn't pay any mind that the pull & foot were MISSING. I only paid a $1 for & it was in great condition til I saw the zipper gone!

Lucky I have another jacket from her big sis she can wear for now. *sigh*

Call your dry cleaners-most have someone they use to make repairs--(I did this at one time for 2 drycleaners). They do zipper replacements. I did them 2 years ago for the cost of the zipper and $4. You can probably get it done there, or look in the phone book for alterations or just ask someone who sews--places like hobby lobby and fabric stores carry jacket and coat zippers.

If it is just the pull thing you can use a paper clip for it. Or if that looks bad they sell "cool" zipper pulls for kids, my DS2 has a veggie tales one. If it is more than just the one piece have the whole zipper replaced. They really aren't that hard to do but if you have never sewn you might want to find someone who does.

mine is the whole thing & actually I have a few jackets w/ zipper problems on this end as my dog when he was a wee bit younger found it amusing to chew on the teeth of the zipper *sigh* He chewed a columbia jacket I was so PO'd. But now you all are giving me inspiration to see if there's a cleaner that would replace the zipper, it's not like I even paid for the jacket (it was a hand me down from a friend of my Aunts).

I have one more idea for you. Try your local high school sewing class teacher. I totally forgot that we had some "advanced" sewers in my class, who did repairs and alterations in class-they started out mending some school uniforms and the stage curtains, then took on small jobs for the community. What monies earned our class used to sponsor a needy family at Christmas.
