The problem with polling in this election was the fact that Donald Trump's candidacy was a shock to conventional wisdom in politics. The pollsters downplayed it and did not really understand the dynamic of the race. It's exactly why Republicans and registered by not "likely" voters were under sampled and groups like African Americans were over sampled in the polling. Their perceived electorate was significantly different than the actual electorate in early voting and on election day.

Trump was able to energize Republican voters in ways that McCain and Romney could not. He also took anti-Republican positions on trade that appealed to blue collar union voters in rust belt states. This is how he turned once solid blue states in his favor. You couple that with inherently flawed candidacy of Hillary Clinton and it's easy to see after the fact why he was able to win.

You sure? Because Trump had fewer total votes than Romney. Perhaps we are giving Trump more credit than he deserves....

Perhaps he energized the perfect population/states for his win. To say he energized the entire republican party is a far stretch.

        Where did he say "entire?"

I thought that was the case but I checked and just the opposite is true.

          Romney: 60,933,504
          Trump: 62,238,425

So Singuy, you misstated pflyers85's post with "entire" and your own statement was wrong.

Congrats SR, you get a gold star and I have mistaken.

It was true a week ago but I guess they still haven't finished all the vote counts.

So as you were continuing to report Clinton's growing lead in popular vote, you assumed Trump's vote were at a standstill?

I was surprised myself because I'm pretty sure I had heard that stated on the news at some point. But apparently Trump actually got about 1.3 million more votes than Romney.

I think there are a lot of reasons Trump won and folks will be studying this election for a long time, but I think a big factor is how many Democrats voted for him because they didn't like/trust Clinton. I've heard from several friends who are Democrats and voted for Obama both times but couldn't support Clinton.

I have several friends that are Democrats as well that felt the same way. My friends that voted for her were actually voting AGAINST Trump. People just don't trust her, and in my opinion for good reason.

Add Michigan to the list of states that Trump won that Jill Stein is going to ask for a recount. People sure have a lot of money to waste.

"Jill Stein is on track to raise twice as much for an election recount effort than she did for her own failed Green Party presidential bid."

"Stein has reminded supporters that they can contribute up to $2,700 for her recount drive — even if they'd already donated the maximum $2,700 to her for the general election."

I don't even know how to respond to this. We work our butts off to do fundraising events for Give Kids The World Village in Florida, which is where Make A Wish sends sick kids for their "wish" to visit Disney World. It costs $5,000 to send a family on a wish trip. The stupid amount of money spent on the election and now on the recount could generate enough income to fund wish trips forever.

It really is disgusting. Pre-election, my DH and I were talking about the obscene amount of money spent on campaigns. You can't help but get angry about it.

I believe it was you that mentioned we should have a CAP for how much is spent on campaigns. You just know that even if that existed, the politicians and their supporters would find ways around it. Slinging mud during prime time isn't cheap!
