  • Recovery Time from tailor's bunion surgery

My wife has tailor's bunions on both her feet. The left one is worse than the right. She went and saw a foot doctor and he said surgery is the best option. She told him that her job entails her to be on her feet the whole time. Som times that is a couple hours others it is all day depending on the shift. He said she would have to be off for two weeks then could go back to work as long as she takes two breaks every hour to keep the swelling down. She just got her work release form filled out by the doctor and it says after two weeks she can go back but only if she has a sit down job and 2-2.5 months if she has to be on her feet.

I am just curious if anyone here has had this surgery and what the recovery time was.

We are afraid that if it is 2-2.5 months they won't keep her job.

    Thanks for your help everyone.

Just wondering if anyone knows about short term disability? If she knows she should have this surgery would short term disability still pay out if we put the surgery off till next year and got std now on her?

She needs to talk to someone in her Human Resources department.
Under the Family Medical Leave Act, she should be able to take 12 weeks off without jeopardizing her job.

I had both bunions removed in 1992. I was off work for six weeks and probably literally off my feet for that long. Of course, it was 20 years ago so the surgery has probably changed since then but I can't imagine having gone back to work earlier.

Also, I wore tennis shoes the whole first month back :-).

If the pain is so bad that she needs the surgery I don't see another option. It will go from bad to worse and you're not going to want her working at all if that happens. Hopefully her employer will have some sympathy and work something out. I dont know what type of job she does, but there should be some sort of compromise that can keep her working, but off of her feet.

She should be able to keep her job as long as company policy allows it.
