Is This the World's Most Expensive Bottle of Whisky?

This made me think of that other thread about what you think is a waste of money.

I like to drink as much as the next guy, and I like good quality spirits, but there is a limit. I can absolutely taste the difference between the cheap stuff and the good stuff, but this is ridiculous. Even if the stuff is the greatest scotch ever made, is it really worth paying more than a few hundred dollars?

Of course, this is a charity auction so at least the money will be going to a good cause rather than just to line someone else's pockets, though I'm sure the auction house will take a nice cut. It would be better to give the money straight to the charity but I don't have a huge problem with this. Charity gets money. Buyer gets a nice bottle of scotch and a tax deduction.

What I have a much bigger issue with is when these are not charity auctions and someone spends an obscene amount that helps no one but the seller. If you have that much money you don't know what to do with, give it away and help others in need.

I'll admit I buy a $80+ bottle of single malt scotch every couple years. Each bottle lasts me about 3-4 years, because I take a very small sample (half ounce) maybe once every couple months and nurse it for a good half hour. I usually have 3 bottles on hand, and they are never mixed with anything.

My tastes aren't refined enough to differentiate tastes above the $90 mark, which is ok with me, because there are lots of selections to choose from.

Exactly. Neither is almost anyone else's. Sales like this are much more about show than about taste. Yes, an $80 bottle tastes better than a $20 bottle, but that doesn't mean a $70,000 bottle is justified in any way.

Agreed, unless one considers it to be an investment, in which case the bottle is to live the foreseeable future in a safe, never to be opened. Me? I like to open my bottles!
