  • Spending money on a Cruise.

How much do you save up for spending money on a 7 day cruise? I have heard $100 a day or $1000 a week.

It depends actually on what you plan on doing. Typically there are "excursions" which you can purchase that range from about $40 and up per person. You can usually see what excursions are offered on the cruiseline's website. It also depends on what amenities you plan to take advantage of. You've got the spa, aerobics classes, fine dining, and of course the bar among other things. Where are you headed?

I agree that it can vary a lot. If you drink, factor that in as alcohol is very costly on cruises. If you want to do organized shore excursions, they vary in price greatly. Onboard photos are something we tend to spend on. Then there are onboard activities like bingo. They also charge for internet access if you want to communicate with folks back home, check e-mail, etc. Then there is always shopping.

And don't forget gratuities. I think those run $10/person/day.

Not sure what cruise line your going on but on Carnival, the sooner you book your excursions the better. Price goes up the closer you get to your sail date and of course is much more when you buy onboard.

Also keep in mind that most excursions can be booked on your own, not going through the cruise line, for a lot less money. Go to cruisecritic.com for advice and tips and recommendations for excursion providers. That website is a wealth of info for cruisers. Lots of helpful people (just like here) with reviews and guidance.

It also depends on if you drink the free drinks or if you order soda pop. When we went, we stuck to the free drinks.
