Our 5 year old Frigidair freezer is broken, not under any warranty (expired July 29)!, and we are looking at purchasing a new one. Any suggestions for an upright energy efficient freezer for our family?

I'd be pretty pissed if a 5-year-old freezer broke. I'd contact the company first and see what they say. If you could find someone to give you a free repair estimate, I would do that.
As for what to get, just be sure it is frost-free. We made the mistake years ago of buying a manual defrost model because I had read they were more energy efficient. That is true, but only if you regularly defrost the thing which is a royal pain in the butt. Once ice builds up on the coils, it is no longer efficient.Steve

Frigidair is one of the bigger names in the freezer buisness. I would also be upset if one of their freezers failed this quickly. I'd call them and basically try to shame them into making this right.
