Need another summer school FUN idea

We homeschool year around, but I lighten up some on the subjects a little, and try to do more FUN things. I have 2 things we are doing this summer, but would like to add one more, so I am looking for ideas. We will still be doing our regular studies, but not spending quite as much time on them. We also will still do our weekly library trips and visit a business weekly to learn about it.

We are studying animal classifications and each girl has an animal notebook. Each day they look up and research an animal, and fill out a form about it and draw its picture. Their notebook is organized by the animal kingdoms. Then, later this summer or early fall we will take our notebooks with us to the zoo.

We are studying the state of Missouri, where we live. Each girl has the A BEKA My state notebook to fill out. All summer long we will visit places and people that we study. This will include Harry Trumans home and library, state parks, Ft Osage, the capital, some lakes....

I am trying to think of fun field trips I took while in K-12 school...

1) Arboretum/Botanical Gardens
2) State capital building
3) Public court hearing
4) Amusement park (we did this when I believe we were studying physics and talked about rollercoasters)
5) Tour of a local college/university

Those are all I can think of. I'm sure you searched the 'net but I found this website that might be useful for you.

An interesting thing I have always thought educational would be to ask kids how people make money and what the supply/demand of that role is.

Lifeguard, concessions salesperson, the delivery person for the concessions and similar.

Then do a similar thought, but start closer to home (like farming or another staple of the Missouri economy) and see how that staple matriculates into a person's (families) local economy.

Not sure of your kids ages, but that is an excersize I ask myself of anyone asking for my money- trying to figure out how they make money and if it is profitable enough to do for a living.

We used to do nature studies type of things in the summer. We would get out our "Plants of the Pacific NW" book and try to identify plants that we found. We would look at the clouds and try to find pictures or whatever in them. We would do astronomy (if we got a clear night). We would try to identify bugs (and the like) that we found. We would go on nature hikes at a nature park.

Actually, we would take our plant and bird books with us everywhere we went. We were always finding some plant that we wanted to look up or some bird that looked different.

Outdoor activities might be fun:

- Using a sundial
- Star gazing
- Listening to the frogs and insects sing at sunset, and studying why they do that ... When you find out, please let me know!
