  • Starting seeds indoors

I want to start some seeds indoors this year, as more of a fun project for my kids than to get a head start on the season (although that does help too). I priced some seed starter at a local hardware store and they wanted almost $6 for a small bag, whereas I could get a large bag of potting soil for $3. A question for someone who knows more about this than I do: is it worth the extra cost to get the seed starter?

    Thanks!

I've never used it. We just use potting soil and recycle containers--soup cans, egg cartons and such to plant in.

FYI the clear plastic containers that fresh fruits, veggie trays and such come in are wonderful to start seeds in.

I just use potting soil and what ever containers I have handy. I have some tomatoes starting in an egg carton but they are close to the point of needing transfered to a larger container.

Well, if you like salads you could buy a bag of mung beans, soak them for a while then put them in a pan and cover with cheese cloth. This site sells the sprouting equipment but you can use the info provided to design you home kit. By the way, mung bean sprouts are the sprouts you generally get commercially. Chinese restaurants sprout batches in garbage can-sized containers. click here
