  • Medical puking question (kinda gross sorry)

Feeling better now no need to report, also no I am not bulimic or trying to lose weight, I was sick.

I really have no idea how to google this question.

Is it better to eat and then puke, or not to eat at all?

My husband and I are both hungry (for me make that STARVING) and both afraid to puke.....

And.. if you are supposed to eat, is there anything you should aim for food wise, to maximize useful nutrients being digested, before something comes back up?

    thanks for the help.

From reading your post I thought you were talking about bulimia, but I decided to read your blog before I stuck my foot in my mouth and I'm glad I did it. It sounds like ya'll are sick and can't keep anything down? I'm not a medical expert, but from a bulimia website (which if you're not bulimic it still has the same result in that you're throwing up a lot):
Such (throwing up excessively) behaviors can be quite dangerous and may lead to serious medical complications over time. For example, the stomach acid which is introduced into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach) during frequent vomiting can permanently damage this area.
If ya'll can't keep anything down it sounds to me like you should see/consult your physician if you haven't already.

Oops, I am so sorry I forgot to mention it here! We are both sick, have been for 'only' two days - two days is pretty short compared to bulimia

...and I don't want to call a doc on Thanksgiving. We plan on calling tomorrow if not better.

      Thanks for the info, though.

Oh plus I seem to be able to keep breakfast down, just not dinner, and he has kept cheerios down.. so not nothing, just not much.

Try drinking clear fluids. Chicken broth and soda crackers are best. The important thing is to get fluids in you so that you don't become dehydrated. 7up or Sprite might calm your stomach some. If you can't keep that down get some pedialyte for babies so you get some electrolytes. Try to avoid greasy and heavy foods. Dry toast or crackers when you are up to solids, until then lots and lots of clear fluids.

Hi. I teach nutrition. OK - you know what - we digest 90% of carbohydrates in our mouth! Amazing! However - we don't ABSORB any of these (digestion is different from absorption) until they get to our small intestine. Mineral broth is another suggestion that's similar to turkey broth, only has a lot more nutrition: just take all veggies you have, cut them up, and throw them in a large pot with water filled up - then boil for 4-5 hours. Then discard the veggies and drink the broth.

The real answer to this is that if eating makes you throw up it's really better to not eat. Just drink water. Fasting is a natural part of our biological cycle, and we can really live for quite a while without food, and for the first week or so it's actually a healthy thing to do. But if you feel faint - try some diluted gatorade. It's no good for you, but it will deliver sugars quickly and replace electrolytes. If you are a DIY person look up an online recipe to make your own, healthy gatorade.

id suggest ginger ale over any sodas. I got dehydrated drinking 7 up when it was all i could hold down. I suffered renal failure too. I ate bananas, all i could hold down besides 7 up, i had pnemonia. Potassium is bad for ur kidneys if you are dehydrated. Id stick to the bullions and gingerale, shake it up first also for less carbonation.

If you want to eat but not digest potential storaged fat (I think this is what you're looking for) then just eat foods that have no calories in them and are healthy. My favorite is eating celery sticks dipped in fat-free sauce. There are a number of foods you can eat an unlimited amount of and digest a completely insignificant amount of calories like: celery, lettuce ( eat a bunch of salad with fat free dressing), tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms etc (their all mainly vegatables). I even read that if you eat fibrous carb foods like green-beans or broccoli then those foods actually count as negative carbs! You burn more calories digesting them then you actually get!
