Be aware, as you were carrying a balance, if you just paid the balance owing, you will likely have one more bill yet to pay; the interest accrued from the statement date until the date your payment was credited.

When you get that last bill, call them and ask them to forgive it or you'll close the account. I did this and it worked for me

I started 2008 with $96k in credit card debt.

I paid the last of it off in December. I also paid off my cars.

Next is the mortgage.

Well, it wasn't easy

I started working for myself this year (with a 2 year contract) and plowed all my extra income into debt reduction and a 6 mo EF.

That was year 1 plan.

Year 2 plan is investing. Great timing I guess, considering market implosion and all.

Luckily I'm working on a contract that is a sure thing until Dec '09. Don't know what is beyond that, so I'm reluctant to invest in stocks, so I may do laddered CDs or bonds of some type. Lots to think about. Future work opportunities seem great because of what I do is kind of specialized, so demand should be there despite the economy - I hope so at least.

The biggest accomplishment, I think, was a behavior make-over I've had this year. Funny how increasing my income dramatically actually helped me reduce spending. But the satisfaction of paying off debt after debt and watching the FICO continually rise was really helpful. Before it seemed kinda hopeless, so why bother. Now it seems like there are endless possibilities.

Like the old saying goes....No tim elike the present to start, and you have a great potential with so many things down.
Now me on the other hand....down 46% since inception a little over a year and a half ago. Kinda sucks, but will be good some day...
